Why Counselling?

At some point in our lives, we will all experience situations and emotions that we cannot make sense of. We may experience a whole host of feelings, which may include feeling lost, alone, confused, angry, depressed, anxious, frustrated or even fearful and despairing. Not knowing what to do or how to respond to such emotions and situations often makes us feel helpless and stuck.

How can we make sense of something we cannot understand? How can we move forward if we’ve lost any sense of purpose or meaning?

Counselling can assist people in times of such distress.

My Approach to Counselling

When we talk about the approach to counselling, what we mean is the style of counselling used.

There are many theories and approaches to counselling. My approach to counselling is an integrative approach which means that I work with a variety of different models including person centred, psychodynamic, gestalt and cognitive behaviour approach. This allows me a flexibility of approach to suit you because we are all different and what works for one person may not work for another.

To illustrate how I work and what to expect, I have listed below some examples of the aims of counselling:

• It offers a safe and reflective space for you to begin to make sense of the chaos and worry that you may find yourself in.

• It encourages you to explore, in depth, what is troubling you and encourages you to take an honest look at thoughts, feelings and behaviours that may be preventing you from moving forward.

•It helps to find ways of changing overwhelming emotions in a way that will take you to a safer and more secure place, where you want to be. By learning about yourself, you can find purpose and meaning again in a way that compliments your true self.

What can I expect?

Your first session is a chance for us to identify your needs and what you want from counselling. It’s a chance for you to decide whether or not you would like to work with me. We will discuss what has brought you to counselling and what your expectations of the process are. To help with the cost of counselling I offer a sliding scale of fees which enables me to ensure that counselling is affordable and therefore accessible to all. I will explain confidentiality and then if we decide to proceed with future sessions we will go on to arrange them, they are usually weekly at the same time and last for sixty minutes as it is very important to be consistent for the process of counselling to be most beneficial for you. If you decide to go ahead then we will work together for as long as you need with regular reviews to check our progress.

Investing in your own wellbeing is the most powerful and fulfilling investment you can make
