Physical Education Program
Student Expectations and Information
This information is prepared to acquaint you with the physical education program at CoronadoHigh School. It is designed to provide the answers to questions regarding the policies and procedures of our daily activities.
Program Score:
Physical education is an integral part of the total educational process. Our goal is to develop physically, mentally emotionally and socially fit citizens. It is also the goal of our department to make our program a positive and rewarding part of the student’s school day.
Program Objectives:
- To develop organized fitness by means of activities that are selected to increase strength, vigor and vitality.
- To develop desirable recreational attitudes and interests that will be valuable in current and future pursuits.
- To develop knowledge of the terminology for various sports and activities.
- To develop an awareness of scoring and officiating for successful play.
- To develop attitudes of good sportsmanship and knowledge of the value sports offer the individual.
Required Materials:
Both girls and boys physical education uniform will be Coronado issue. This is a gray shirt and navy blue short each carrying the Coronado physical education logo and athletic shoes that tie and socks. Along with the uniform, all students will purchase a locker and is required to pay a lock fee for the use of a school issued lock. No dark soled shoes will be allowed in the gymnasium due to the fact that they leave marks on the gym floor. Students who do not dressout in the appropriate attire will receive a non-dress and lose their points for the day. A student who is not dressed is expected to complete an article summary in order for learning objectives to be met. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN A DEAN’S REFERRAL.

Non-Dress Policy:

1st Non-Dress – Verbal Warning
2nd Non-Dress – Parent Notification
3rd Non-Dress – Required Dean’s Referral (Call to parent by the dean)
4th Non-Dress – Dean’s Referral - In-House Suspension (IHS)
5th Non-Dress – Required Parent Conference (RPC)-Parent comes in
6th Non-Dress – RPC - 3-Day Suspension
7th Non-Dress – Loss of Credit for the Semester
The uniform and lock may be purchased the first week of school during the physical education period. Beyond that time frame, uniforms can be purchased at the student store during lunchtime.
Cold Weather Uniforms:
During cold weather, students may wear long sleeve sweatshirts, jackets, sweatpants, stocking caps and gloves if necessary. However, these items must be worn over the regular physical education uniform. Sunglass and baseball caps, are not allowed in the physical education setting. Students who wear their clothes that were worn to school under their P.E. uniform will be given a non-dress.
Course Description:
The state of Nevada for graduations requires physical education. Each student must pass four semesters for a total of two credits. The course includes the introduction and development of a variety of skills for physical activities. These activities include team sports and leisure time games. The development of cardiovascular fitness will be stressed during the school year with the use of exercise and running activities.
Course Outline:
- The following units will be taught at Coronado; Flag Football, Tennis, Paddle Tennis, Wrestling, Dance, Basketball, Tumbling, Volleyball, Wiffleball, Field Hockey, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Speedball, Rugby, Kickball, Physical Fitness, Track & Field, Self Defense, Badminton, Softball, Archery, Weight Lifting, and Aerobics.
- Each semester will contain 4 unit activities. Each of these units will be preceded by rules and skill instruction. Each of these units will be followed by a skill test and a written test. In addition, any time a written assignment is given, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar will be an integral part of the grade.
- All of the units taught are subject to change according to facility assignments, assemblies,construction and weather changes throughout the school year.
Evaluation (Grading):
A consistent point system will be used by the Coronado Physical Education Department throughout the school year. Each student may earn 10 points per day, 5 for dressing out correctly in the proper P.E. uniform and 5 points for participating correctly, showing good sportsmanship and ample effort.
Participation = 5 points per day
Dress = 5 points per day
Run Days= 20 points per day (5 of which are dressout)
On rundays, the students grade will be determined by a specified time in conjunction with the students displayed effort.
*Lack of participation will result in loss of points at the teachers’ discretion*
At the end of each unit a 25-point skill test and 25 point written test will be given. At the end of each 9-week grading period, students points will be calculated and a letter grade will be issued as followed:
A - 90 to 100% of possible points
B - 80 to 89%
C - 70 to 79%
D - 60-69%
F - 59% or less
In addition, a student may be given an assignment worth up to 50 points if they have been assigned to detention or if they are on a medical excuse.
Medical Excuses:
A note from the parent is required each day a student is to be excused from participation in physical education because of illness or injury. If the student’s condition is serious enough to prevent him/her from participation for more than 2 consecutive school days, a note from the student’s physical will be necessary beginning on the 3rd day of non-participation. Failure to obtain a note from a physician on the 3rd day will result in the student losing their 10 class points each day that they continue not to participate.
A student whose injury of illness prevents their active participation in physical education may be asked to assist the instructor during the class period or they may be given a written assignment as an opportunity to earn their 10 daily points.
A student who has been advised by a physician no to participate in physical education for an extended period of time will be scheduled out of their physical education class as soon as possible.
Behavior:
Students are expected to display appropriate behavior at all times, this includes: a)
showing respect to instructor, classmates, and other faculty and staff; b) refraining from
vulgarity, profanity, and other offensive language or behavior; c) proper care of all equipment
As teachers, we have the right to teach, and other students have the right to learn: therefore anything done to disrupt this process will be considered a discipline problem and will be handled accordingly. Profanity will not be tolerated!
The students shall be:
Respectfultoward the teacher, other students, and all equipment and facilities used during the class.
Responsiblefor being to class on time, being dressed appropriately, and ready to learn.
When the student chooses to act inappropriately the following repercussions will be employed.
- Warning, loss of points
- Phone call home
- After school detention
- Referral to the dean
Lockers/Locks/Valuables:
In order to cut down on theft, each student will pay a $5 fee (separate from the uniform fee) for the use of a locker and lock. Students are not allowed to bring a lock from home: all personal locks will be cut off. SHARING OF LOCKERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.
The physical education staff will take all precautions to prevent property loss during physical education class. It is understood, however, that neither the physical education staff nor CoronadoHigh School is liable for any property loss, which might occur to the student during the physical education class.
The student is instructed not to bring valuables, such as jewelry and money to their physical education class. It is also the student’s responsibility to make sure their locker is locked at all times.
Electronic Devices:
Cell phones and other electronic devices will not be allowed in class. If a
student is seen using these items, it will be taken to the Dean’s Office. Any items that are taken up must be picked up by a parent / guardian.
Citizenship:
Students will receive a “U” for citizenship anytime they disrespect their classmates or teacher. We do not give verbal warnings and the first sign of disrespect will not be tolerated. Verbal attacks will result in a “U” and a loss of daily points. Physical attacks will result in a “U” and a loss of 50 points for the week and be escorted immediately to the Dean’s office.
Gum/Drink/Food:
Gum is not allowed in the locker room or other activity areas. A student’s citizenship grade will be affected if they are found with gum and disciplinary actions will be taken.
Students are not allowed to have food or drinks (other than bottled water) in the classroom and PE setting, including the locker area. Those who do bring in such items will be told to throw them away immediately. If they obtain the items after a verbal warning they will be given a dean’s referral.
Make-up Work:
Students will be given a chance to turn in make-up work for absences. The
student will read an article on a female/male athlete, nutrition, or health related issues and type a one page, double-spaced summary. Please attach a copy of the article you have read to receive your points. Students will have three days for each absence to make-up work.
Absences & Tardiness:
The physical education department will follow the CCSD Southeast Region policy regarding tardiness and absence. Excessive tardiness will not be tolerated and will be referred to the deans office for disciplinary procedures.
Excused Notes:
A written excuse from a parent can only be used for two days. For any length of time after the two days, a doctor’s excuse must be presented to the student’s physical education teacher. For any doctor’s note that is handed in, it must state what the student can (not) do and the length of time. If the student needs to be excused for an extended period of time, a schedule change will be done. STUDENTS ARE STILL EXPECTED TO DRESS OUTWITH AN EXCUSED NOTE, UNLESS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE.
