HOMEARAMA RETURNS TO PITCHKETTLE:
COUNTRY LIVING AT ITS FINEST
SUFFOLK, Va. - It’s back to the Suffolk countryside for Homearama 2017. This fall, TBA’s annual showcase of custom-built homes returns to The Estates of Pitchkettle Farms, site of a very successful Homearama in 2006.
Fall Homearama runs three consecutive weekends from Oct. 20 to Nov. 5. Show hours and days are Noon to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and from Noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $10 and kids 12 and younger are free.
Traditional Homearama, with its beautifully furnished homes on spacious landscaped lots, has established a loyal following over the past 35 years. Pitchkettle Farms is a lively and dynamic neighborhood in the ever-growing city of Suffolk. It is less than a quarter of a mile off Highway 58 and is five miles from Historic Downtown Suffolk. Downtown is home to the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, the Downtown Farmer’s Market, Constant’s Wharf Park and Marine and numerous shops, hotels and restaurants.
What’s in a Name?
The term “pitchkettle” is a quaint moniker that harkens to a bygone era, when the world moved slower and things were less complicated. And while the community has grown steadily throughout the years, the name is reminiscent of the past.
Local historians and longtime residents have various stories about how Pitchkettle Farms came to be. One theory was that Native Americans traveled Pitchkettle Road often and “pitched kettles” to mark camp. Another was that at some point in the 18th century, there was a pitch making operation along the Nansemond River. For years the farm was referred to as the site of the pitch kettle.
Fast-forward to 2017 and this region with the obscure name is now one of the most popular locations in Hampton Roads for those homeowners who want to embrace country living.
