CORNISH MARATHON 2017 - RACE DAY INSTRUCTIONS

Thank you all for entering – we really appreciate your support. I hope you are feeling fit and ready to go on November 19th. (I have copied in those of you who sent the bulk club entries; including runners for whom I don’t have individual e-mail addresses – please pass on if possible).

Just a few reminders etc. for you. Get a cup of tea and settle down…. they are all important ;

  1. Car Parking. Please, please, please try and car share if possible – it is a real problem for us. This year is our biggest ever entry and those problems are even greater.

For early arrivals there will be some parking in Pensilva school, near the start. However, for the majority we are again using as a parking area, the small industrial estate just to the south of Pensilva. There will be ample signing to show you how to get there. Please follow the signs and DO NOT try to park in the village itself. Doing so will risk the safety of all concerned and compromise our ability to put the race on in future.
A map is attached showing where the parking is – there will be shuttle bus or it’s about a 500m walk so leave some time either way.

  1. Registration. You will pick up your race numbers in the Millenium Centre, as usual. Don’t forget to write your contact and medical details on the back.
  1. Goody Bags. Please pick these up after you have registered, before the race. The hoody size you have requested will be on your number - no size changes please.
  1. Baggage Can be left with our friends from the Cornwall Hospice – please thank them for their time and help.
  1. Special Drinks If you are wanting Special Drinks taken out on the course they must be placed in the designated boxes for transport out by 09:30 AT THE LATEST.
  1. Water Stations Are every 3 miles and operated by our friends from the Brownies and Guides, and Dobwalls football club. Please be thoughtful to both them and fellow runners especially at the congested stations at 6 and 9 miles. Special Drinks will be placed beyond the water, and in number order – the stations will try and spot you coming, but again, please be thoughtful and polite – they don’t have to be standing out in the cold to help you !
  1. The Start will be at 10:00am. There is sharp turn in the first 20m or so – please be careful.
  1. Safety As you know the route is all on road some in villages and a lot on narrow country lanes. These will NOT be closed to traffic, so be aware at all times that vehicles may wish to pass – please follow Marshals’ instructions.
  1. Headphones must not be worn – their use will lead to disqualification.
  1. Graffiti Previously, some supporters have sprayed messages on the road surface for ‘encouragement’. This did not go down well with locals or the highway authorities – we had to scrub them off.DON’T DO IT !
  1. Spectators Vehicles Please do not attempt to follow the race in cars as this causes congestion and is a real safety risk.PLEASE do not park at the water stations where again, this causes congestion, blocks visibility and is a safety hazard.
  1. The Finish Is always busy. If you are still compos mentis enough please move away to get your drink, banana.
  1. Pasties and cups of teaDon’t forget your free pasty and cup of tea – but please be patient with the folks handing them out – they are runners just like you, not domestic servants !
  1. Cut-off time While we are obliged to set a time limit (6 hours), that is when the marshals can officially start to stand down (depending on how many are still out on the course, as reported by our sweeper) but we won’t abandon anyone. Most of the marshals always stay on if they know there are still runners on the course you will always get an official time, your hoody, pasty and everything else.
  1. Presentation Will be as soon as we can !!

Phew !! I hope you got this far – if you did thanks very much – let’s hope for our usual good weather - ENJOY THE DAY !!
