Description of Service
High Secure and associated services are provided from AshworthHospital. Ashworth is one of three High Secure Hospitals which serves the North West of England, West Midlands and Wales. It provides inpatient care and treatment for men who are deemed to be a grave danger to others, under the Mental Health Act 1983, in conditions of maximum security.
Setting Where Work Carried Out
  • Most of the trainee’s work will be carried out at AshworthHospital. It has approximately 210 inpatients; all detained under The Mental Health Act 1983. Experience will be gained in assessing and managing patients with severe and enduring mental disorders (mental illness and personality diagnoses).
  • There will be opportunities to undertake assessments and referral from prisons, other high secure units and medium secure units.
  • The trainee will also have the opportunity to assess referrals from the Courts under Consultant supervision.
  • The trainee will have the opportunity to spend a period of time within the neuropsychiatric rehabilitation service and undertake psychological assessment and therapies.
  • There is a well stocked library with IT facilities on site.

Responsibilities of Trainee
Work in accordance with GMC guidance for doctors.
Engage in the induction process to understand security and administration procedures at the hospital.
Ensure that your training portfolio is maintained, WPBA are undertaken.
At the start of the post develop a PDP (referring to the competencies schedule) and agree this with your clinical supervisor.
Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled.
Effectively participate and liaise with other members of the MDT in the care and treatment of patients.
Participation in education and audit is mandatory.
Prepare medical reports in good time and attend relevant meetings.
Undertake mental state assessments and reviews following discussion with your clinical supervisor.
Meet with the college tutor for reviews.

Psychotherapy Training
There is a wide range of psychotherapy training available at AshworthHospital in a range of modalities including CBT/CAT/MHA and short term focussed interventions. A specific case will, after discussion, be assigned to you.
It is important you maintain the Mersey Deanery psychotherapy logbook.
