THE ROLE OF STUDENT AMBASSADORS
The primary role of astudent ambassador is to assist with the marketing of UNSW Art & Design’s undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. This involves providing accurate information on alldegrees offered by UNSW Art & Design, admission requirements, application and selection procedures, student support services, university life and future careers opportunities to prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Student ambassadors are often the first contact that prospective students have with UNSW Art & Designat university promotional events, career markets and when visiting high schools, and are therefore seen as the public face of UNSW.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The main duties of a student ambassador involve representing Art & Designat events such as:
- UNSW Promotional Events
Student Ambassadors participate in promotional events such as the UNSW Open Day in September, UNSW Information Day in January, Faculty Information Days, Scholarship Information Evening and Parent Information Evenings. Student ambassadors provide degree information, give presentations and undertake a general public relations role in promoting UNSW.
- Career Markets and High School Visits
Student Ambassadors attend tertiary information events, career markets and visit high schools with the aim to provide prospective students with degree information and a student’s perspective of university life. This usually consists of one-on-one discussions and giving brief presentations.
- Campus Tours
Student Ambassadors facilitate campus tours for prospective students and visitors to show off the campus and provide information about degrees and university life.
- Administrative and Customer Service Duties
Student Ambassadors may be asked to provide general administrative and customer service support to the Student Recruitment Office. This could involve assisting with marketing campaigns, modelling for photo shoots, assisting with phone and email enquiries during peak seasons, clerical duties, activity planning, and workshop development.
PAY RATE
The student ambassador position is paid at a General Staff (Casual) Level 1, Step 1 rate, which is currently $29.33per hour.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Successful student ambassador candidates will be selected based upon the following criteria:
- Current UNSW Art & Design student in second year or above, but not in final year
- Good academic standing
- Excellent communication and presentation skills - appropriate language skills, effective use of voice, ability to give clear information, excellent interpersonal and group communication skills. (Public speaking experience is an advantage)
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Excellentcustomer service skills
- Current driver’s licence (full preferred) and a confident driver in both city traffic and country driving conditions
- Highly motivated and outgoing with an enthusiasm for university life and study at UNSW
- Ability to show initiative and to work with minimal supervision, ability to apply common sense to handle unforeseen situations
- Willingness to work (occasionally) outside normal business hours
- Broad understanding and knowledge of UNSW including academic, extra-curricular activities and support structures for students
- Proven ability to work and study concurrently
- Previous work experience in customer service area is an advantage
- Involvement in Art & Design community life
- Ability to relate well to high school students
