Saint Mark’s Church Wardens, Lay Pastoral Administrator, Officer and Vestry

Greetings from Canon Vicki

There has been a lot going on “behind the scenes” . Liz, Connie and I met in late January about vestry-related matters in order to help the transition in senior wardens go as smoothly as possible. I look forward to working closely with Liz in the months ahead. I encourage you to communicate with Liz, a member of the vestry, or with me if you have concerns or matters that should come to our attention concerning the life of St. Mark’s.

The work of the Kennebec Transformations Team (aka K5) continues, with teams from the five K5 congregations meeting twice monthly. On February 22, the K5 vestries will meet together at Christ Church, Gardiner. I want to express my gratitude to Elmer, Joe and Rebecca for their continued commitment to this important work. I value the opportunity to be a member of the St. Mark’s team .

As a Canon Missioner for the Diocese, it’s inspiring to worship in many different settings each week and have the opportunity to spend time with congregants. Meeting with vestries allows for deeper insights and helps me better support congregations through the sharing of resources and leadership development, as well as an opportunity to link congregations to other diocesan staff for support and assistance.

I’m honored to be doing what I’m doing – and so glad to be a part of your journey at St. Mark’s.

Saint Mark’s Church Visitation, Baptism, Confirmation and Reception May 11, 2014:

Eucharistic MinisterDescription (EM)formerly Chalice Bearer

Eucharistic Ministers are confirmed adult communicants authorized to administer the Consecrated Elements (both bread and wine) at a Celebration of Holy Eucharist.

Saint Mark’s has six communicants who are licensed by the Diocese of Maine and are willing to administer the Consecrated Element (wine) at the Celebration of Holy Eucharist. You see them in action every Sunday when Saint Mark’s has the Celebration of Holy Eucharist.

A Great Lesson on Stress:

A young lady confidently walked around the room with a raised glass of water while leading a seminar and explaining stress management to her audience. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, 'Half empty or half full?' She fooled them all. "How heavy is this glass of water?" she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. To 20 oz.

She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.

If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on."

"As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced.
So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night. Pick them up again tomorrow if you must.

Hello to everyone from sunny Tobago:

Gordon and I have been very busy since we have been here this year: we have been to 2 Harvest Festivals at the Anglican church, met a Bishop from Mass. that took place in the service for one of them and several other Priests from all over. The harvest here is a big thing. We all take fruit or veggies or bread and they have a big service with choirs from all over the Island taking place. Then in the afternoon there is a cantata which is wonderful.

Last year Gordon and Terry fixed the organ at the main Anglican Church downtown in Scarborough St Andrews. It took them 3 days but they got it working again.

Gordon has been fishing several times. We have had Barracuda, Tuna, Bonito and many more fish I have never heard of but that we have eaten for supper. Oh, and flying fish. They are amazing. They fly above the water and they taste wonderful filleted.

Ken and Brea are expecting their second baby in March before 17th so we hope to see them on the way back to Maine. Alex and Cheryl are due in June They are having a little boy.

We have friends arriving next weekend for a week then another couple the following week so we will get some beach time in I am sure.

Keep well our friends and family at St Marks; we look forward to worshiping with youin the Spring.

Peace,Sue and Gordon

Saint Mark’s Buildings Key List

For security purposes, I am trying to compile an accurate key list. If you have any church keys whatsoever, would you please either email me (the preferred method) or call and leave a message on the voicemail telling me what keys you have? I am simply compiling a list but it is badly needed. Thank you very much for your help. Stephanie Cote, your administrative assistant.

Saint Mark’s Bible Study resumes March 9

Our reading and discussion series on the Bible, with Dick Bamforth as leader, will meet on the Sunday afternoons of Lent at 3pm in the Farnum Room. Last year in spring and fall we explored the Acts of the Apostles which is volume 2 of Luke's Gospel. We examined the major events of this earliest history of the first century church and the missionary journeys of St. Paul. This spring we will discuss one of the letters Paul wrote to the church communities he was responsible for in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey).

The only requirement for participation is the willingness to read a few pages each week of a modern translation of Scripture. Bring your own Bible or use copies provided. Questioning is encouraged as we explore the significance of St. Paul's words to our own situations.

Consider this chance to get better acquainted with our Biblical roots. We begin sharply at 3 and conclude at 4:30 or sooner. Remember, we begin on the First Sunday of Lent, March 9, for six sessions. If you plan to join us or have questions, please contact Dick Bamforth at 626-0073 or , or speak to me on Sunday.
