Faculty may deliver or request photocopies of copyrighted work to be placed on reserve in the library. Notice – The copyright law of the United States (Title 17. United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproduction of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copy law.

  1. MATC Milwaukee Campus Library places a copyright notice on electronic reserve work displayed for courses.
  2. Item(s) placed on electronic reserve are from instructors, academic departments, library subscribed periodicals, or from other areas within the institution. Items may be acquired through the Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service. It is strongly recommended that instructors find and use relevant items from the library databases, if possible.
  3. All material that warrant copyright clearance should be accompanied by signed documentation attesting that such possession and use of the material comply with the copyright law. The document must accompany the reserve material and remain on file in the library. It is the responsibility of the instructor/department to comply with all copyright laws for materials they place on reserve. The library may provide some assistance with obtaining permission.
  4. MATC Milwaukee Campus Library will place articles/book chapters on electronic reserve but the following rules are applicable to the electronic reserve items:

-no more than one of the works will be by the same author

-no more than one of the works will be from the same volume or book

  1. Special requests are welcome however all reserve material must adhere to copyright laws and are within the guidelines of the CopyrightClearanceCenter. Again, the library may provide some assistance with obtaining permission.
  2. All electronic reserve material is password protected off campus. Patrons with a valid school ID number will be authorized access to electronic reserve material.
  3. Reserve items are on a semester use basis. All electronic reserve items are disabled at the end of the semester.
  4. Students can print electronic reserve articles within the fair use guidelines and, they are responsible for the cost of printing electronic reserve materials.
  5. The library may require 3-5 days to prepare electronic reserve material for student use and accessibility. Instructors should anticipate their needs and submit material for electronic reserve at their earliest possible convenience.
  6. Instructors must sign the Reserve Request Form agreeing to the Reserve Desk policy before items are placed on reserve.
