Electronic Supplementary Material Figure 1.Age model inferred for WCA-3B core compared with inferences from water lily seeds. Depth-vs-age model (line) and radiometric age data (symbols) for sawgrass core C0096 (a). Macrofossil profiles from triplicate cores at WCA-3B (b-d). Arrows in graphs b-d indicate features of macrofossil profiles consistent among all triplicate cores and used to refine the age model for core C0120. Age values inferred from sawgrass sclereid and seed profiles (described in Figure 2) are shown in red. An additional age value inferred from water lily data is shown in black.

Electronic Supplementary Material, Table 1.Radiocarbon ages of bulk peat samples from Everglades cores in WCA-3B and Shark River Slough (SRS) in Everglades National Park). Sample pre-treatments and radiocarbon dating were performed by Beta Analytic (Miami, Florida, USA), either using standard radiocarbon (SRC) or Accelerated Mass Spectrometry (AMS) methods, the latter used when sample material was limited (<1 gdw). A standard acid/alkali/acid pre-treatment was performed on all samples prior to 14C analysis.

* Conventional (Conv.) ages are reported in RCYBP (radiocarbon years before present, ‘present’ = 1950 A.D.).

** Radiocarbon ages were calibrated to calendar years using INTCAL04 Radiocarbon Age Calibration (Talma and Vogel, 1993; Reimer et al. 2004).

& C0027 was collected as a duplicate (within 50 cm) of core C024.
