Content – A Study on the Book of Philippians

Part 5 – “Living your best”

Philippians 3:12-14

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Main idea

There may be some confusion surrounding what it means to be content. Contentment does not mean complacency. Complacency suggests a feeling of being fine with how things are and not wanting to make things better. Instead, contentment comes from the aggressive, heartfelt desire to be all that God wants you to be for His glory. Contentment is found in giving your best and becoming the best you can be.

1. Cultivate vision, gather positive people, and get rid of what distracts you

Real contentment comes from the vision of being your best, surrounding yourself with people who will inspire and getting rid of toxic influences.

Q: Think about "Spring cleaning". In any area of your life, what are some things you can do without?

“Therefore…let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.”

Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

2. Be action oriented, don’t put anything on your timetable, and have faith

You will never be truly content outside of God’s will for your life. Be willing to learn and grow, never letting the fear of making a mistake paralyze you. Trust in God’s perfect timing and His ability to do great things with your life.

Q: What was a time when God’s perfect timing came through for you?

“…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
