Job Purpose

To undertake specialist health and safety tasks, to support the work of the Health & Safety Team within the College and provide an efficient administrative service.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Job

  1. Monitoring and Support

  1. With direction from the Health & Safety Manager, to undertake regular practical inspections and interventions across all College activities as a key function in the monitoring and maintenance of a safe working and learning environment.

  1. To provide timely feedback and interventions to Safety managers based upon observations made in above.

  1. To support College staff and students in their understanding of, and adherence to, College H&S systems, procedures and functions.

  1. Facilitate staff drop in sessions for the provision of H&S advice and guidance.

  1. Accurately administer and maintain the College’s accident report data to facilitate the clear dissemination of accident statistics and trend analysis.

  1. Develop and monitor work on Leading and Lagging performance indicators.

  1. Provide support to external networks, benchmarking and comparators projects and data analysis.

  1. Contribute to the monitoring of health and safety standards in the College.

  1. Assist in the undertaking of H&S audits identified within the Management Cycle process or the H&S policy, and any required as part of the management of our safety systems.

  1. Cross College duties

  1. Contribute to the development and implementation of College policies, specifically those relating to health, safety and wellbeing.

  1. Assist with the delivery of Risk Assessment training.

  1. In consultation with the H&S Manager, design and develop health and safety related forms and templates for use College wide by staff.

  1. Support the integration of environmental issues into the health and safety system.

  1. Conduct Noise Assessments and develop and maintain a Noise Register.

  1. Conduct individual advanced DSE and ergonomic assessments to ensure compliance with statutory duties, reduce sickness absence and to train and educate users in safe use of the equipment.

  1. Administration and Reporting

  1. To receive and analyse accident / incident reports ensuring the necessary follow up actions are undertaken in a timely manner. As part of this, to ensure that urgent actions are brought to the attention of the H&S Manager and / or SMT.

  1. Identify and notify HSE of RIDDOR reportable incidents in consultation with the H&S Manager and SMT.

  1. Draft and produce letters, correspondence and communications suitable for use at all levels.

  1. Oversee and manage the stock of H&S resources.

  1. Provide, as required, reports relating to health and safety issues.

  1. Continuous Professional Development

aParticipate in staff development activities to support Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and keep a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) to evidence personal development and impact on practice.
bActively participate in the college performance management processes, including appraisals to support personal and professional development and enhance student experience.

Essential criteria for the post
Educated to GCSE level or equivalent.
Literate, numerate and accurate.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications (MS Office and Outlook)
Good working knowledge of database systems and the ability to produce associated reports.
Good working knowledge of office and administrative procedures.
Health & Safety qualification i.e. NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent).
Good organisation skills.
Able to prioritise tasks effectively and manage variable workloads.
Able to comprehend, evaluate and report on information.
Supportive, logical, attentive to detail, enquiring, flexible, able to work without direct supervision.
Prepared to work as part of a team and undertake tasks, on occasions, outside normal hours.
Ability to forward plan.
Excellent interpersonal skills.

Full UK Driving Licence
Able to conduct Display Screen Equipment Assessments

Working knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation relating to the land based sector
Training qualification
Experience of working within vocational education sectors
Ability to recognise wider corporate needs in relation to service delivery.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Working Hours

Basic working hours are from 08.30 to 17.00 Monday to Friday but some flexibility will be required to meet the needs of the business. This is an all year round post. There will be some evening and weekend working required to support faculty activities, and whole college recruitment and promotional events.

Annual Leave

The holiday year is from 1 September - 31 August each year. The annual leave entitlement for this role is 26working days, plus 8 bank holidays and up to 5 efficiency days when the college closes at Christmas. Annual leave is bookable subject to business needs and should be planned and agreed with your Line Manager.Annual leave sheets will be available from the start of the new holiday year (1 September).

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

This post will be entitled to CPD for industrial updating, personal and professional development. All CPDmust be planned, agreed and booked with your Line Manager.
