With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current RoyalHospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.
Gartnavel GeneralHospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.

Applications are invited for 2 full-time(10PA) and 1 part time (8PA) Consultants in Oral Medicine posts based at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, the largest provider of oral healthcare in Scotland. The post holder will join one of the busiest Oral Medicine departments in the UK. Opportunities exist for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, audit and participation in research. The department has close links with other acute medical and surgical specialities in Greater Glasgow & Clyde.
Applicants must be registered with the GDC and on or eligible for inclusion on the GDC Specialist List for Oral Medicine. Applicants must have extensive recent experience in all aspects of Oral Medicine service provision in an NHS hospital.

The Oral Health Directorate is contained within the East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership (CHP) and comprises a single NHSGGC Board wide organisation structure incorporating:

GlasgowDentalHospital and School is situated in the centre of Glasgow. It is part of the Oral Health Directorate structure and is the main referral centre for specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area. It also fulfils a similar role for surrounding Health Boards and serves a population of up to 3,000,000 people.
The total number of chairs within the Hospital and School is approximately 160. In addition there is an adjoining Postgraduate Centre and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is a 10 minute walk away. There are strong links with the University of Glasgow and other hospitals in the region and there is an excellent library with on-line literature search facilities.
GlasgowDentalHospital and School comprises the following clinical departments:

All departments hold regular Clinical Governance and Audit meetings. The Dental Staff Association meets regularly.
The DentalSchool delivers a modern, integrated Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme over five years to an undergraduate population of approximately 400 students. The School is ranked top in the UK for student satisfaction. Oral Surgery is taught within the Clinical Dentistry Section. Undergraduate students are present on all Oral Medicine clinics and the post holder would be expected to play an active role in clinical teaching.
Taught postgraduate programmes are offered in Primary Dental Care, Restorative Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics, with an option to specialise in Oral Surgery in the second year of the Primary Dental Care programme.
Post graduate research opportunities are provided, within the three main research themes within the University of Glasgow Dental School; Infection and Immunity, Community Oral Health and Biotechnology and Craniofacial Science.

- The Department of Oral Medicine
This is one of the busiest Oral Medicine units in the UK, with approximately 10,000 patient visits per annum. The Department of Oral Medicine is situated on Level 3 of the GlasgowDentalHospital. The consultant clinic is due to be refurbished in 2015/16. Biopsies are usually carried out in the Oral Surgery Treatment Area on Level 4. Many of the supporting Dental Nurses and Clinical Support Workers are phlebotomy-trained.
- The Posts
The post holders will contribute to all aspects of the clinical activity of the Department of Oral Medicine. The prime clinical role of the post will be to provide a specialist service for local general dental and medical practitioners for outpatients with complex oral mucosal disease, patients with oral disease occurring as a manifestation of systemic disease and
patients with complex facial pain.
There is no out of hours on call commitment however there is an on- call rota and second cover rota to ensure that an Oral medicine opinion can be provided during working hours
It is expected that the successful candidate willsupport the service re-design work already underway to support a largely diagnostic service that supports suitable patients being managed in primary care according to the accompanying care pathway.

The above staffing levels reflect the staffing position within Oral Medicine at the time this job description was compiled. Staffing levels may change to meet future service and business priorities. It would be desirable for the post-holder to have a sub-specialty interest. The post-holder/s may be expected to adjust his/her commitments from time to time in agreement with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director in order to accommodate variations in service needs. The job plan will be negotiated under the 2004 Consultant Contract with the successful applicant.
- Relationships with other departments
Good relationships exist with all departments in the DentalHospital, with the Regional Maxillofacial Unit at the Southern General and with other medical specialties across Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
- Teaching & Research
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is an important component of the department and the holder of this post will be expected to take part in chair side clinical undergraduate teaching and clinical assessment. We have rotational Dental Core trainees at various levels in the department and the post holder would be involved in the clinical aspect of their training. Research opportunities exist for those interested, however research would not form an essential past of this post. Excellent library facilities are available within GlasgowDentalHospital and School and the University.
The department benefits from a clinical research facility on level 7 to facilitate research activity.
- Clinical Audit
The post holder will be expected to participate and contribute to the Clinical Audit Programme. Audit meetings are held within the DentalHospital and School; these are an essential component of Clinical Governance.
- Other Duties
The post holder will be asked to assist in undergraduate teaching and or continuing education according to experience. The post holder may be expected to deputise for absent colleagues in line with consultant contract.
12.Administration
Administrative duties include those which are associated with the care of patients and the running of the department. The Consultants work co-operatively with the Directorate Management in the efficient running of services and the post holder will be expected to share with Consultant colleagues the responsibility of advising the management on clinical matters. There is a requirement to work within the financial and other constraints decided upon by the Directorate. There is an administrative team who assist with clinical admin and secretarial services for the Department. Appropriate office accommodation will be provided for the successful candidate.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
