The Occupational Health Service (OHS) provides specialist advice and support to 38,000 NHSGGC employees and a range of other public and private sector businesses.
As a new Consultant you will participate in the implementation of the Occupational Health Clinical Governance Strategy, support the Staff Governance Agenda and contribute to the strategic and operational delivery of Occupational Health services.
Applicants must have the ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team and possess strong communication skills in order to promote innovation and change and also be able to communicate effectively to both managers and employees within the Board. Experience of working in a large complex multi professional organisation would be advantageous.
Given the range of health and wellbeing challenges, competence in dealing with musculoskeletal, mental health and occupational hazards as well as knowledge and experience of the HSE Stress Risk Assessment tools would be desirable.
Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to a CCT in Occupational Medicine, holding membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed date of the interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

INTRODUCTION
A vacancy currently exists for a Consultant in Occupational Health within in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Glasgow Occupational Health Service (OHS). Occupational Health is a specialist service providing services to NHS staff and a number of organisations outside the NHS.
The OHS actively contributes to the Health Improvement Agenda with a key focus on Healthy Working Lives (HWL) and the delivery of the Staff Health Action Plan. As a key stakeholder of the Board, our focus on proactive health improvement will indirectly support the Board’s aspirations for the health and wellbeing of the wider community.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE
The broad aim of the OHS is to provide clients with high quality specialist services which will contribute to the highest standards of occupational health and safety. It comprises of a multi-disciplinary team of occupational physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, counsellors and clerical support. This team provides specialist advice to the NHS employees throughout the Greater Glasgow & Clyde area as well as other public sectorand private sector businesses.
OHS staff members contribute to a range of training and teaching activities and undertake research activity.

Occupational Health Service Management Structure
The OHS is led by the Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development and managed by the OH Service Manager. The team also includes 2 Nursing Team Leads, Lead Physiotherapist and Administration Manager. Supervision for the Medical Staff is provided by a Clinical Director within Mental Health Services
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
General Responsibilities
The postholder will play a full part in the range of NHSGGC OHS’s activities and will be expected to exert independent professional judgement for the clinical, research and teaching work. The postholder will report managerially to the OH Service Manager and professionally to the Clinical Director within Mental Health Services.
Managerial Responsibilities
Manage specific services between NHSGGC OHS, the NHS and clients outside the NHS.
Develop NHSGGC OHS commitment to quality management systems including Clinical Governance.
Facilitate the team approach to multi-disciplinary collaboration within OHS and allied professional groups, including Health and Safety Advisers, Control of Infection staff and Health Promotion Officers.
Clinical Responsibilities
Provide a full range of clinical advice and support activities as outlined in the attached Appendix: A Guide to the Service in keeping with the new Consultant Contract (9 DCC PAs and 1 SPA).
Teaching and Research
The following teaching research opportunities will be available to the postholder:
- Participate in teaching and training programmes with which the Service collaborates. These include undergraduate and postgraduate courses for medical, nursing and other staff.
- Participate in the supervision and in-service training of Specialist Trainees and other Occupational Health staff.
- Participate in research relevant to Occupational Health.
- Suitably qualified candidates may be invited to establish links in the area of teaching and research with members of academic staff associated with the Department of Occupational andPublic Health at the University of Glasgow.
Audit and Continuing Medical Education
The postholder will have the opportunity to participate in clinical audit and continuing medical education.
Timetable and Job Plan
The weekly timetable of duties including the locations at which they are to be performed will be agreed with the successful candidate. In the event of a major incident the postholder maybe required to work outwith normal working hours.
This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full time consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication and management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning.
Part-time applicants will be considered for this post with appropriate changes to the job plan.

Desirable Requirements
Previous experience in Occupational Health in the NHS or with a large private sector organisation is desirable. Ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team and well developed communication and IT skills are desirable. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.

SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
