City of San Mateo Department of Public Work is seeking a Construction Inspector I/II who is highly motivated, experienced and communicative to join the City’s Capital Delivery Division. This individual will manage and inspect projects in CIP, Private Development and ROW. The Construction Inspector I/IIwill be the eyes and ears in the field and will play an essential role in project success. The Construction Inspector I/II will join a team that consist of a Senior Engineer, Assistant Engineer and four (4) Construction Inspectors. The Construction Inspector I/II will be expected to provide project inspections in all three (3) sections as mentioned above.

Construction Inspector I/II is an essential piece of the Capital Delivery team which oversees construction for CIP, Private Development and ROW. WhatYou’llDo

•Review plans and specifications of assigned project with construction supervisor; attend and hold pre-construction conferences.

•Inspect materials for identification as conforming to specifications and plans.

•Take samples of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories; perform tests on soils and concrete; monitor cathodic protection systems.

•Inspect all phases of construction for CIP, private development and ROW projects.

•Responding to public comments and concerns.

•Monitor manpower reports and payroll for compliance with State and Federal regulations.

•Inspect various structures such as utilities, streets, sidewalks, gutters, and other off-site construction; check line, grade, size, elevation and location of structures for conformance with specifications and regulations.

•Record amounts of materials used and work performed; prepare necessary reports for progress payments.

•Inspect adjacent properties for damage from construction activity.

•Investigate resident complaints; confer with property owners regarding project schedule, hazards and inconvenience.

•Help locate other utility structures ahead of work sites.

•Schedule service interruptions with least interference and least inconvenience to properties.

•Prepare daily activity records and reports.

•Coordinate work with other City departments and utilities.

•Inspect federally funded projects.

What You Bring

Construction Inspector I

•Two years sub-professional engineering or journey level public works or utility heavy construction experience preferably including some construction inspection experience or journey level survey work which also includes inspection work on projects.

•Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade.

•Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver license.

Construction Inspector II (In addition to Construction Inspector I requirements)

•Two years Construction Inspection experience comparable to a Construction Inspector I in the City of San Mateo.

•Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training, preferably including an Associate Arts degree in engineering materials and design.

Bonus Points (highly desirable)

Background in engineering principles

Interview Process

Depending on the number of candidates, the first round of interviews may be conducted on February 22, 2018. A limited number of the most highly qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. The process may include an Oral Panel interview and department interview. An employment list will be established from those who pass the examination process. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least 6 months with the possibility of an extension for an additional 6 months. Once placed on an employment list, and at the time a vacancy occurs, eligible candidates may be contacted by the hiring department and scheduled for additional department interviews.
