What is this program and why do we have it?

The Constitution and Bylaws (C&B) program informs and educates members of the American Legion Auxiliary on the importance and power of properly written, reviewed and updated documents, policies and procedures at all levels. C&B are the basis for the governance of the Department, District and Unit. Preparing and adhering to the C&B and Standing Rules, as updated, will ensure a more successful organizational process and provide the structure to follow at all levels of the organization.

Properly written, reviewed and updated documents, policies and procedures strengthen the organization at all levels through clarification of roles and responsibilities, creating an environment that allows goodwill to develop and grow.

Parliamentary procedure helps maintain order and provides a method for the orderly conduct of business.

Good record keeping, through minutes enables a Unit to look back and know the decisions that have been made by the membership.

Goals for the Year

  1. Each Unit should review the C&B, as revised, for the Department and work to bring their respective C&B in line with the most recent Department version or to update accordingly based on the vote of the Units.
  2. Each Unit should be using the most recent revision/version of Robert’s Rules of Order to conduct their meetings.
  3. Each Unit should be maintaining an accurate record of the business conducted at regular and special meetings through the use of minutes that are kept and then read and approved at the following meeting. (This is a requirement of Wyoming law with regard to non-profit organizations.)
