CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

BRIEF JOB SUMMARY:

In accordance with the needs of the ages of the population served by Mainspring Academy, the Conflict Management Specialist will intervene to manage crises through implementation of proximity, verbal redirection, and use of training acquired through the Crisis Prevention Institute.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Attitude:

  • Greets student and parents with respectful and welcoming attitude
  • Articulates and interprets school philosophy
  • Speaks in a tone of voice that relays respect for those you are speaking with

Communication with students and parents (as needed):

  • Discusses daily expectations
  • Reviews rules of the classroom
  • Reviews broad daily schedule and any changes occurring that day or week
  • Provides daily communication of student interactions to their respected parents

Intervention:

  • Maintains calm, effective verbal communication with students experiencing stress and frustration
  • Uses positive presence and peaceful proximity to diffuse volatile student interactions
  • Understands and applies interventions to address escalating through the Four Levels of Crisis Development
  • When needed, applies physical intervention techniques from Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training to maintain the safety of students and staff
  • Verbally processes timelines of crisis events with students and staff

Process Student Information:

  • Ensures proper records are made regarding crises on Incident Report/Behavioral Intervention and Body Check forms

Daily Operations:

  • Facilitate student arrival and dissmisal
  • Provide lunch coverage and supervision
  • Respond to crises with prompt, effective action focused on establishing safety of students and staff
  • Other duties as assigned by administration staff

Professional Development/Coaching:

  • Attends supervision sessions Speaks with Head of School or Director of Clinical Services about concerns or training/resources needed

Communication:

  • Meets with therapists or student -shared staff to become aware of progress or concerns and provide feedback
  • Attends team meetings
  • Reviewsupdates to treatment plans, action plans, or other behavioral management documentation
  • Conductsclassroom based observation of students receiving behavioral treatment

Culture:

  • Participates in community outreach and continuing education opportunities on a regular basis
  • Represents Mainspring Academy in the community at large
  • Participates in all fundraising events
  • Attends various afterschool and offsite events throughout the academic year

Facilities:

  • Assist in the daily operations of school, ensuring a safe environment that is conducive to learning and growth
  • Attends to tasks and responsibilities associated with successful operation of the school
  • Supports the maintenance of Mainspring Academy as an aesthetically attractive and safe environment
  • Periodically performs spot checks and tends to facilities clean up in a timely and hands-on manner

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Must be able to assume a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crouching, sitting, standing) in the course of working with children with developmental disabilities and severe behavior problems.
  2. Must be able to lift and carry clients in braces and other adaptive equipment.
  3. Must be able to restrain/hold/transport clientsover 150lbs.in the course of behavioral management.
  4. Must be comfotable intervening unassissted, under extreme circumstances, with teenage and older adolescent students attempting to harm themselves and others.
  5. Must be able to receive detailed information through both oral and written communication
  6. Must have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  7. Must have manual dexterity sufficient to perform various functions for extended periods of time.
  8. Must be physically present at the assigned job site.

  1. SUPERVISED BY: Director of Operations

ADJUNCT SUPERVISORS: Head of School

  1. WORKS IN CONJUCTION WITH: Academy Classroom Personnel

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Skills targeted for training: Unique Learning Systems curriculum, ELLM curriculum, Florida Common State Standards,data collection, discrete trail training, natural environment teaching, implementing behavior plans, general responding to problem behaviors, delivering effective instructions, schedules of reinforcement, PECS, activity schedules, implementing general time out protocol, implementing differential attention, appropriate crisis management skills, introduction to the functions of behavior, introduction to error correction procedures and errorless learning, least to most restrictive prompting hierarchy.
  • Individual must demonstrate competency across all age groups due to the diversity of the children and families served by Mainspring Academy.

EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or equivalentis required.
  • Some college preferred

EXPERIENCE:
  • Direct experience managing physical crises with older children/teenagers struggling with emotional and behavioral disorders

RELATED TRAINING:
  • Maintain up-to-date training/certification status in CPR, the CPI and other company-provided in-service topics.
  • Must have and maintain a basic knowledge of computer systems and applicable software.

  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective communications and working relationships with other employees, clients, and their families as well as the general public, across all age groups, including but not limited to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations.
  • Ability to demonstrate professional behavior by adhering to organizational policies and procedures, and assuming authority appropriately.
  • Must maintain adequate personal grooming consistent with professional appearance.
  • Knowledge of normal/abnormal growth and development throughout the age continuum.
  • Ability to provide, assess, interpret, and communicate age-specific data (in response to treatment protocols).
