Configure Respondus to Use Canvas

Before you can publish a test to Canvas, you will need to configure Respondus so that it can communicate with the Canvas instance at Missouri S&T. You will only have to do this ONCE per machine on which you have Respondus installed.

  1. Set the Current Personality on the Start tab to beInstructure Canvas.
  2. ClickOpenand select an existing Respondus file. You always need to have a Respondus file loaded into Respondus before you can interact with the other tabs (Edit, Settings, Preview & Publish, etc.).
  3. Click thePreview & Publishtab.
  4. ClickPublish to Canvasin the sidebar.
  5. ClickPublish Wizard.
  6. From the Canvas Server drop-down menu, select- add new server -.
  7. SelectNo, I want to enter the server settings manuallyand clickNext.
  8. Open a web browser and login to Canvas (
  9. Navigate to any course within Canvas. Copy (CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the URL in the address bar of the web browser into the text box.
  10. ClickExtract. This will pull in server information about Canvas.
  11. Type in a name to describe the server (e.g.S&T Canvas).
  12. Type in yourUser nameandPassword.
  13. WARNING!You will need to check the box markedRemember my User Name and Password. Otherwise, the next time you attempt to access Canvas through Respondus, you will receive an "invalid credentials" error message and won't be able to login.
  14. ClickOKin the upper-right corner. The Instructure Canvas Server Settings should look similar to the image below.

Publishing a Test to Canvas

  1. On the Start tab, ensure that the current personality is set to Instructure Canvas.
  2. ClickOpento choose a test to publish. You will not be able to do anything on the Preview & Publish tab until you have a test open.
  3. Select a Respondus file to publish and clickOpen.
  4. Click thePreview & Publishtab.
  5. Click thePreviewtab and then clickPreview the Fileif you want to review the test questions before publication to Canvas.
  6. ClickPublish to Canvasin the sidebar.
  7. ClickPublish Wizard.
  8. Choose Type of Publish:
  9. Publish to single course– recommended if your test only applies to a single course/section.
  10. Batch publish to multiple courses– recommended if you need to use your test for multiple sections of a given course (e.g. Chemistry, Calculus).
  11. Select the Canvas Server from the drop-down list.
  12. ClickNext.
  13. A window will pop open asking you to type in your userid and password. This is due to the particular authorization tool for logging into Canvas. ClickLogin.
  1. ClickAuthorize.

  2. Select the assessment type, and fill out the other options as appropriate for your course.

  3. ClickNext.
  4. Select a place within Canvas to publish your test. Courses are displayed as folders. Click on a folder to open up a course.

  5. ClickNext.
  1. It will take a couple of minutes to publish your test. ClickFinishwhen you see-- Publish Completed Successfully --.
