If your child is absent, please call the office to let them know. A note stating the reason for the absence must be brought to school as soon as possible to avoid an unexcused absence.

If you would like to send a birthday treat with your child on or near his/her birthday, please feel free to do so. These treats will be eaten during our snack time. Children with summer birthdays may celebrate a ½ birthday and we will assign a date as close as possible. Please do not send birthday party invitations to be distributed at school unless allboys or girls in our class receive an invitation.

I will occasionally send home book order forms for you and your child to look over. Book clubs offer books at reduced prices. It's a great way to build your child's home library, however don’t feel obligated to order.

Parent and Teacher conferences are held during the first and third quarter. Watch for information and reply accordingly. Conferences will be held on October 6th and7th, as well as February16th and 17th.

Disciplineis simple. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all. Our Classroom rules are:

  • Show respect to others.
  • Work and play in a safe manner.

Donations are sometimes needed to supplement our curriculum. We will let you know through the weekly newsletter what is needed and when you may supply the items.

Information about field trips will come home in the H.E.R.O. book and will be detailed in the field trip permission slip and weekly newsletter.

Students will have a 30 minute Gym class which alternates 2 - 3 days a week with Mr. Walstad. The children are asked to wear athletic shoes on gym days. Girls are asked to wear short under their uniform skirts.

Students will occasionally have homework in Kindergarten. Homework assignments will vary and will be sent home in the H.E.R.O. book. Unless otherwise noted, please return the homework the following day.

H.E.R.O. BOOKS help keep us organized. The three-ring binder houses a homework folder, take home papers folder, and other items that assist with communication between home and school.

Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. Kindergartners are very capable of doing many things on their own and we encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please work on the following self-help skills at home with your child: zipping, tying shoes, dressing, cafeteria skills, etc.

Various writing activities take place every day in kindergarten. One way we accomplish this is through writing stories in our journalsduring writer’s workshop. Encourage your child to write at home for a variety of purposes.

Keep updatedby reading the classroom newsletter every week and checking the H.E.R.O. book every day for other notes and information.

Our class will visit the library once a week. Your child will check out two books when we visit the library as a class. Additional books may be checked out when your child returns their books to the library during the week.

Our class eats lunchat 11:25. If lunch money is sent to school, please send it in the H.E.R.O. book with your child’s name on it. There is a pencil pocket pouch for this purpose that is located in the front of the H.E.R.O. book.

During Literacy Work Stations students practice reading and writing skills while the teacher works with individual children and small Guided Reading Groups. The Work Stations are designed to strengthen letter sound knowledge, listening skills, oral language, rhyme, letter formation, and cooperation.

Literacy Play Stations are a time for your child to experience independent learning opportunities. Students self-select an area in which to work (play). Children learn through play, which makes this an important time. This is an integral part in the growth and development of your child.

The students will have a 30 minuteMusic class 4-5 times per weekwith Mrs. Kirkpatrick.

The kindergarten Math curriculum provides students with mathematical experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue throughout their school career and lives. Many of our math concepts are covered through our daily calendar routine. Every morning students will work with math tubs to review skills taught in the math curriculum.

A weekly newsletter will be emailed on Fridays to keep you informed about what is happening in our class.

Please refer to the district calendar on the District web page for days that there will be no school.

The building willopenat 7:45. Students meet in the gym until picked up by their teacher. Kindergartners sit on the floor on the south gym wall.

Kindergarteners will be celebrating four holiday parties. Information and a volunteer sign up sheet will be sent home at the beginning of the year.

Kindergarteners have a daily morning, lunch, and afternoon recess.

The Kindergarten Reading curriculum provides students with opportunities to read many books and poems. The reading curriculum will introduce all the letters and sounds to build a good foundation for learning to read independently. We will work with the students in both whole group and small group situations.

The focus of the kindergarten Science and Social Studiescurriculum is on developing an awareness of the world in which we live. Science and Social Studies concepts and skills will be explored utilizing a literacy based, hands-on approach.

We will send home a monthly snack calendar in the H.E.R.O. book. Each student will bring snacks for the class during their assigned weeks. Please refer to the district acceptable food and beverage list before sending your snacks.

A Show and Tell schedule is included in the H.E.R.O. book.

School Start and Dismissal times are from 8:05 – 3:32.

If your child has any changes in their transportation please let your child’s teacher know in writing, by email, or by voice mail.

Zzzzzzz - Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime routine is a wonderful gift you can give your child. We will be resting during the afternoons for approximately 20-25 minutes.
