“Crown Him Lord of All”

Introit – Psalm # 90:12-17[1]

P:So teach us to number our days

C:that we may get a heart of wisdom.

P:13Return, OLord! How long?

C:Have pity on your servants!

P:14Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,

C:that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

P:15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,

C:and for as many years as we have seen evil.

P:16Let your work be shown to your servants,

C:and your glorious power to their children.

P:17Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us,and establish the work of our hands upon us;

C:yes, establish the work of our hands!

All:Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Prayer of the Day[2]

P:O God, the strength of all who put their trust in You, mercifully accept our prayer, and because of the weakness of our mortal nature, we can do no good thing without Your aid, grant us the help of Your grace that, keeping Your commandments, we may please You in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Lesson

Amos 5:6-7, 10-15

Seek theLord and live,

lest he break out like fire

in the house of Joseph,

and it devour,

with none to quench it for Bethel,

7O you who turn justice to wormwood

and cast down righteousness to the earth!

10They hate him who reproves in the gate,and they abhor him who speaks the truth.

11Therefore because you trample

on the poor

and you exact taxes of grain from him,

you have built houses of hewn stone,

but you shall not dwell in them;

you have planted pleasant vineyards,

but you shall not drink their wine.

12For I know

how many are your transgressions

and how great are your sins—

you who afflict the righteous,

who take a bribe,

and turn aside the needy in the gate.13Therefore he who is prudent

will keep silent in such a time,

for it is an evil time.

14Seek good, and not evil,

that you may live;

and so theLord, the God of hosts,

will be with you,

as you have said.

15Hate evil, and love good,

and establish justice in the gate;

it may be that theLord, the God of hosts,

will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Second Lesson

Hebrews 3:12-19

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.13But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.14For we share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.15As it is said,“Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”16For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?17And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?18And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?19So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Holy Gospel

Mark 10:17-22

As he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”18Jesus said to him,“Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.19You know the commandments:‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”20And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.”21And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him,“You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”22Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Next Weekend In Our Worship

One of the most misused verses in the Bible occurs as a part of next Sunday’s Gospel reading, Mark 10:27 “With God all things are possible.” We will discuss that verse and the verses around it next Sunday in our message entitled, “Impossibilities Made Possible.” The Lessons for the day are: Psalm 119:9-16; Ecclesiastes 5:10-20; Hebrews 4:1-13; and Mark 10:17-30. May the Lord guide and bless your study of His Word this week, and your preparation for worship next weekend.

  1. Special Appeal: Rev. Stephane Kalonji at ZionLutheranChurch in Chicago was beaten and robbed at gunpoint while he was delivering food and other needed items to one of his members on Tuesday evening. He suffered head injuries that required hospitalization and 9 staples in his head. He is now at home recovering. He lost money, his credit cards, drivers’ license, and other items. His estimated loss, with hospital bills and all, is around $1000. LCC is asking you to keep Pastor Kalonji in your prayers and, if you are moved, to provide some financial support to help him with this set back. Pastor Kalonji is a mission pastor with a family on a small salary so although the $1000 may not seem like much to many - it is a large amount in his situation. Any help you are led to give will go Dollar per Dollar to help him!
  1. Cookie Helpers Needed: We need volunteers to help us prepare for our annual cookie walk. Volunteers are needed beginning Saturday October 24th to help with baking cookies. Anyone willing to help between 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm on Saturdays should meet in the commons.

  1. LFL Quote:"Above all things, my faith motivates me to do as much as I can and strive to do more in the pro-life movement. As a child of God, I know a truth that is stronger than anything the world can throw at me—the power of eternal life through Christ. I cannot, because of who I am as a child of God, keep silent as my own generation is denied the chance to exist." Janice Nihill, a 17-year-old senior and student pro-life leader at the 2008 March for Life in WashingtonD.C.This "Life Quote" is from Lutherans For Life –

Concordia’s Mission

“Serving Christ from Cradle to Crown” faithfully communicating the saving Word of God, and providing excellence in ministry for the benefit of all people of all ages, is the mission of Concordia.

Communion

(If you are not a member and wish to receive Communion, please read the following)

We welcome all members of Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod congregations who are baptized and who have confirmed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Those who desire forgiveness for all their sins, and strengthening of their faith in the hope of everlasting life in heaven; and who believe that with the bread and wine of Holy Communion they are receiving the very body and blood of Christ Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins and strengthening of their faith are welcome to partake. Others are asked to please refrain from partaking until they have had opportunity to discuss Communion participation with the pastor.

Distribution of the wine is by common cup and/or individual cups. If you choose the individual cup, please hold the cup in front of you until the communion assistant has come past you. Grape juice, for those who cannot have wine, is available in the center of the individual tray. Those desiring a blessing from the pastor, but not Communion, are asked to please place two fingers over their lips to alert the servers of their desire.
