Conclusion Paragraph Notes

(REWARD: Mastering this will prepare you for Eighth Grade and the writing you’ll do beyond!)

The conclusion paragraph brings your essay (in this case, argument) to a close.

DO NOTrepeat the introduction paragraph or restate your thesis statement.

The purpose is to:

  1. Bring your body paragraphs together
  2. Connect back to your introduction paragraph in a FRESH perspective
  3. Focus on the connection between the body paragraphs in relation to your topic:
  4. How do the three points work together?
  5. What do the three points mean for your topic and claim?
  6. Tie together both the introduction and body paragraphs. Think of the conclusion as the FINAL statement you are leaving your reader/audience with.

You want to provide the reader with a strong conclusion, and you want the reader to feel that your argument is over.

It is the final thought with which you will leave the reader. It should be powerful, thoughtful, and effective. It can include:

1.What the writer has learned

2.What the reader can learn

3.An evaluation (think about and analyze the points you made)

Remember: no new information is addressed in the conclusion!

Teacher’s Example:

Eventually, the benefits of genetically modified foods will surpass the cons. GMOs will profit not only the producers, but also the consumers. Not only will the overall quality of food advance, but also the progress of every day life. As researchers continue to advance in the science and knowledge about GMOs, there will continue to be more finite evidence to support their advantages. Producers and consumers should be made more aware of the positives, instead of only focusing on the negative. As the future continues to unfold, so will the benefits of GMOs. This opportunity of advancement lies ahead and will be a satisfying feat for society.

With your partner, analyze both Ms. Ruberto’s introduction and conclusion paragraphs.

  • How does her conclusion connect with the introduction? (Does she use a fresh perspective?)
  • In analyzing her three topics (look to the thesis statement), how does the conclusion focus on the connection between the body paragraphs in relation to the topic?

Introduction:

As I opened up the refrigerator crawling with excitement for my smoothie, a frown quickly appeared. When I opened the container of strawberries, they were rotten. I thought to myself, “How could this happen? I just bought these strawberries two days ago!” Genetically modified foods allow for the alteration of the genetic material of foods (Non-GMO Project). This allowance can create many benefits to not only producers of the GMOs, but also the consumers. Humans should not be denied the opportunity to advance not only in science, but also in aspects of every day life and progression. Genetically modified organisms have provided valuable benefits to society by aiding multiple areas of daily human interaction and experience.

Conclusion:

Eventually, the benefits of genetically modified foods will surpass the cons. GMOs will profit not only the producers, but also the consumers. Not only will the overall quality of food advance, but also the progress of every day life. As researchers continue to advance in the science and knowledge about GMOs, there will continue to be more finite evidence to support their advantages. Producers and consumers should be made more aware of the positives, instead of only focusing on the negative. As the future continues to unfold, so will the benefits of GMOs. This opportunity of advancement lies ahead and will be a satisfying feat for society.

Strong Ending
Showing connection between the introduction and body paragraphs- tying everything together.

Student Example #1

As science and technology progresses, the dangers from GMOs will also progress. Scientists can discover endless ways to make food more sustainable, but in actuality, the foods can threaten humans and animals, as well as the environment. Although GMOs may seem revolutionary at first, scientists and researchers have proven that eventually, these organisms will cause an abundance of harm. The well-being of humans and animals will gradually decline because of GMOs, and the environment will suffer. It is known that GMOs have caused controversy for the past decade. It is now society’s responsibility to come out of this age of science and technology in order to avoid unnatural food consumption.

Student Example #2

Ultimately, the use and development of GMOs will create a more improved and capable world. At this point in time, advancements in the world are increasing rapidly, making it only legitimate for GMOs to be a part of that growth. As the movement forward in society continues and scientists develop their ideas about GMO's even further, realization will strike and will spark the reality of the benefits, eventually outweighing those few and unimportant disadvantages. It is clear that people will soon be more receptive of the effective side of GMOs in the future, rather than the negatives. There will be many doors to choose to open and roads to take in the future that lie ahead for the production of GMOs.
