School Year Data 2001 / 2002

Introduction

2001 has plausible data in all categories, despite enrollment numbers in this year being among the highest recorded. It is the first year of a decline in enrollment numbers from 2001-2006. There are data for Enrollment by School Type (including and excluding Adult Learners), division of that enrollment by grade level (excluding Adult Learners), Grade 12 by 17 and the results of the S4 Language Arts Standards Test (the Standards Test is merged with two birth cohorts to better reflect the composition of the S4 population).

Cautions

All data look good in terms of enrollment and division of enrollment by grade level. There is a fairly dramatic increase in enrollment in Band Operated Schools between 2001 and 2002, but that increase does not persist and is more unlike other years than the 2001 number.

The S4 Language Arts Standards Test data now count absences as well as exemptions and those who dropped the course. The marks are representative of other years and there are data even for those students with no recorded mark. This year continues the trend of there being a few hundred more students recorded as having done the S4 Language Arts Standards Test.

The Grade 12 by 17 and S4 Mathematics enrollment data are plausible and reflect numbers and distributions that are consistent with other years. While the graduation rates data are more reliable than earlier years there are still some discrepancies between those data and others.

There are 17 fewer students recorded as having been in both S1 and S4 UP Math than just S4 UP Math. There are a few possible reasons for this; a student from this birth cohort who was advanced a year at any point would have been enrolled in S1 before 1997, any student who skipped S1 would never have been enrolled in S1, and there are instances where a student is recorded as being in a different grade while they are enrolled in S1.

In terms of thedistribution of students this cohort must have some, ~400 (~3% of the cohort), students enrolled in S4 Math courses that were not counted as enrolled in S4 by 17. These students were most likely held back, or some similar error to those enrolled in S1 but not noted as such.
