Nursing Care

·  What precedes the concept for it to exist

·  Events or incidents that must happen before the concept

Consequences

·  Untoward events or outcomes that occur due to malfunction within the concept

·  Positive events or outcomes that occur due to proper functioning within the concept

Interrelated Concepts

·  Concepts which can affect change in the other

·  Concepts which work together to ensure a normal process

·  Concepts which if depleted or impaired can cause a negative consequence in the other

Explanation of Mood and Affect Diagram

Mood and affect is an emotional state and its observable expression. In order for Mood and Affect to occur the following antecedents must be present: cognitive development (consistent with developmental age), neurological balance (neurotransmitters) and individual experiences. The attributes, which measure whether mood and affect exist, include: euthymia, performance of ADLs (activities of daily living), insight and reasoning, and appropriate expressive gestures in response to situations.

Sub-concepts are components of mood and affect and include: Mood Disorders, Thought Disorders, and Coping which includes Eating Disorders and Stress. Interrelated concepts can affect change in mood and affect or vice versa. These concepts include: safety, functional stability, cognition, coping interpersonal relationships, grief, sensory perception, nutrition and sleep. Positive consequences of mood and affect may include: continual positive relationships, healthy sleep and eating patterns, problem solving abilities and being a productive member of society. Negative consequences of mood and affect include such things as: addictions, violence and agitation, sadness and blunting, depression and impaired health.

When nursing care in required, the focus is placed on improving the antecedents in order to optimize the attributes and ultimately produce positive consequences.
