COMPUTER LITERACY AND COMPETENCY

All business majors and pre-majors are required to demonstrate his/her knowledge regarding the competency of the computer literacy prior to taking 100-level courses. This requires a student to complete three five weeks courses (MIS 1 – Operating Systems and Electronic Communication including Internet Browsers (Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer),Outlook 2013 and Windows 7; MIS 2 – Spreadsheets including Excel 2013; and MIS 3 – Word Processing and Presentation Graphics including Word 2013 and PowerPoint 2013ORpasstheonline hands-on challenge exams for MIS 1, MIS 2 and MIS 3.

MIS 123 ONLINE HANDS-ON CHALLENGE EXAM INFORMATION

Step 1: Sign-up for the challenge exam(s)

Go to the Student Financial Services Center (Cashier’s Office) located in Lassen Hall 1001. Pay the non-refundable fee of $5.00for each challenge examof MIS 1 and/or MIS 2 and/or MIS 3. A total of $15.00 charge is required for taking all three exams of MIS 1, MIS 2 and MIS3. Retain yourreceipt.

Step 2: Purchase the required registration code from the Hornet Bookstore.

At least one week before the challenge exam(s) date, purchase (1) SIMnetfor Microsoft Office 2013FullSuite student code (ISBN 9781259354762)issued by McGraw Hill if taking MIS 1 or MIS 3 or more than one exam, or (2) SIMnet for MicrosoftExcel 2013student code(ISBN9781259354779)issued by McGraw Hill if taking only MIS 2 exam.

The purchase of SIMnet for Microsoft Office 2013Full Suite student code by McGraw Hill is highly recommended because it has fewer problems. The Hornet Bookstore will not refund any purchase of SIMnet for Microsoft Excel 2013student code or of SIMnetfor Microsoft Office 2013Full Suite student code. It is the student’s responsibility to purchase the correct registration code.

Step 3: Register SIMnet

At least three days before the scheduled challenge exam date, register SIMnet account through the Internet.

The SIMnet URL for the challenge exam(s) is Follow the SIMnet registration procedure to obtain a username and associated password for taking the challenge exam(s).Be sure to use the same first name and last name for SIMnetas you have registered for classes at the College of Business Administration (CBA), California State University,Sacramento (CSUS) in order to properly record your challenge exam result(s).

SIMnet provides “SUPPORT” with “System Requirements Test” for testing your computer system; “Technical Support” via Phone (1-800-331-5094), Email and Connect Chat Online; and “SIMnet Instant Help” for getting the help resources that are posted at the lower right hand side corner of the “SimNet Sign In” screen at the CSUS SIMnet web site (

Step 4: Take challenge exam(s)

  1. Go to the designated computer lab (Tahoe 1009) 10 minutes before the scheduled time for taking the challenge exam.
  2. Show yourstudentID andgive the receiptto the challenge exam proctor before entering the computer lab.
  3. Select a computer and start the Firefox onlyto sign in using SIMnet web site your SIMnetusername and password.
  4. Click your name on the top of the screen (before the “?” mark) to get the “Profile” screen.
  5. Select the proper class name from the “+ Add a course” in the middle andright hand side of the screen.
  6. Select MIS 1 -Operating Systems and Electronic Communication for taking MIS 1 challenge exam, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets for taking MIS 2 challenge exam, or “MIS 3 - Word Processing and Presentation Graphics” for taking the MIS 3 challenge exam from the “Available Courses” popup menu in the middle of the screen and click “Enroll” to enroll in the appropriate course.
  7. Click “ASSIGNMENTS” on the top of the screen.
  8. Click “Select another class” on the top of the screen to select MIS 1 -Operating Systems and Electronic Communication for taking MIS 1 challenge exam, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets for taking MIS 2 challenge exam, or MIS 3 - Word Processing and Presentation Graphics for taking MIS 3 challenge exam from “Available courses” to get the corresponding “To do” screen.

For taking MIS 1 challenge exam:

  1. Click “Exams” on the left hand side of the screen to get the “To do” screen of the exams.
  2. Click the MIS 1 Operating Systems and Electronic Communication Exam Part I (Internet Browsers and Outlook 2013)
  3. Click “Take exam” to load the exam.
  4. Click “Start Exam” to begin.
  5. Complete the MIS 1 Operating Systems and Electronic Communication Exam Part I (Internet Browsers and Outlook 2013) before doing the following steps since you only have one try.
  6. Click the “ASSIGNMENTS” on the top of the screen again.
  7. Click “Exams” on the left hand side of the screen to get “To do” screen of the exams again.
  8. MIS 1 Operating Systems and Electronic Communication Exam Part II (Windows 7).
  9. Click “Take exam” to load the exam.
  10. Click “Start Exam” to begin.
  11. You have exactly 25 minutes to complete the 15 questions included in the MIS 1 Operating Systems and Electronic Communication Exam Part I (Internet Browsers and Outlook 2013) and another 25 minutes to completethe 15 questions included in theMIS 1 Operating Systems and Electronic Communication Exam Part II (Windows 7).
  12. You only have one try to take each part of the MIS 1challenge exam on the same challenge exam date.

For taking MIS 2 challenge exam and/or MIS 3 challenge exam:

  1. Click the proper challenge exam name and click “Take exam” on the next screen to load the exam.
  2. Click “Start Exam” on the right hand side of the screen to begin.
  3. You only have one try for each exam on the same challenge exam date.

For every MIS 123 challenge exam:

  1. You have 30 attempts for each question and SIMnet will only record your last answer for the question.
  2. Each question has a different weight.
  3. Every challenge exam is an online hands-on and limited to 50 minutes. Therefore, you need to start taking the exam no later than 1:00 p.m. in order to have the full allowable time.
  4. Immediately inform the exam proctor whenever you encounter a SIMnet and/or computer system problem without closing and exiting the SIMnet problem screen.

Grading

A student will receive a “pass”for fulfilling the computer literacy requirements of the upper division classes without earning any creditif the score of the challenge exam is equal to or greater than 70 points.

A student will receive a “fail”for fulfilling the computer literacy requirements of the upper division classes if the score of the challenge exam is less than 70 points.

The student will be expected to take the challenge exam at the specific sign up date and time.

Regulations

The student must observe the following regulations to have a proper exam environment in the computer lab for other students.

  1. Show yourstudent ID and give thereceiptto the exam proctor before entering the computer lab.
  2. Turn off cell phone, pager and other electronic equipment.
  3. A receipt is only good for the specific challenge exam date.
  4. There is no refund if a student cannot make on the specific challenge exam date.
  5. No lap-top computer or other personal computer is allowed.
  6. No chatting, discussing, e-mailing or taking photovia any electronic device is allowed during the challenge exam.
  7. No book or noteis allowed during the challenge exam.
  8. Absolute quiet, no eating and/or drinking is allowed during the challenge exam.

A student violating any of the above regulations will be asked to leave the computer lab and receive a fail for the corresponding exam.
