Course Description:

This course will follow a number of objectives. The first is the intelligent reading, interpreting, discussing, and analysis of many types of literature. The second is the intelligent and efficient production of various types of compositions. In addition, literary literacy will highlight major cultural iconography. Vocabulary and G.U.M.S. will also be addressed on a weekly basis to improve the quality of the details.

Another objective of this course is to learn how to utilize background knowledge for all reading and writing, to apply knowledge of genre, purpose, audience, and content to all reading comprehension and writing compositions, and to synthesize and evaluate literature and composition at a collegiate level.

The AP Literature and Composition and the AP Language and Composition exam preps will be part of the curriculum; however, the taking of both, one, or none of the exams will be optional. Exams will take place through NHHS, costs will run approximately $85.00 each, but college credits are directly dependent on the specific college’s expectations and the student’s results.

Grading Policy:

Daily Work= 20% includes…

preparation for class: books, homework (quality & timely)

performance: sharing ideas, listening to others, note taking of good ideas & examples

Process Grade- 30% includes…

the preparatory work behind large assignments such as working outline

weekly evaluations such as impromptu writings, vocabulary quizzes, practice tests, etc.

Product Grade- 50% includes…

the evaluation of all long-term assignments

literary syntheses

the evaluation of all oral presentations

Class Protocol: Students are expected to…

*arrive on time and begin bell work on your own

*be prepared at class with all assigned work

*maturely handle divergent and controversial topics of discussion

*act with honesty and respect toward ALL members of the class

*wait to be excused from class & do not pack up until bell has rung or class is over

*treat school equipment with care & concern & pick up after yourself

*NO food in classroom; Water, only!

*Treat classmates as teammates; a learning community encourages all of us to be our best

*be proactive in dealing with missed classes & discuss any problems with me before problems arise

If inappropriate behavior occurs:

*Expect a fair warning and to change your behavior immediately

*Expect conferences and consultation to discuss any issues of concern

*Expect to leave class, if behavior does NOT change; I have a job to do, so I need to do it.

Absenteeism:

*See me before school or after school, but do NOT expect me to catch you up in 2 minutes before class

*See me before school or after school, if you have ANY questions (helping you is my job)

*Make up quizzes and tests are to be taken outside of class in a timely manner (see Student Handbook)

*Pick up any missed handouts and notes from a classmate (you decide whom you trust)

Late Work:

*No late daily work will be accepted due to the timeliness of the situation

This will not be a problem because I promise to work hard to help you in any way I can; however, my help may mean that I will help you to trust yourself.
