Position Summary:The Liaison Nurse will function in a collaborative care model; assisting & supporting assessment, treatment, disposition & follow-up of patients experiencing mental health difficulties/ crisis at Selkirk & District General Hospital. The Liaison Nurse will act as a resource to Selkirk & District General Hospital for patients with mental health &/ or substance abuse issues; emotional/ aggression management issues & function in a supportive role to families as required. Responsibilities include use of assessment tools, screening, crisis intervention, referral/ follow-up, short-term crisis case management, counselling, discharge planning, consultation, preparation of reports, data collection and education to clients, family, staff and general public.

Qualifications:

•Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (e.g. BPN, BScMH, BScPN) preferred or RN/RPN with related experience will be considered

•Current member in good standing of a professional/licensing body; evidence of this to be submitted every year

•5 years combined experience required in Mental Health ER, Acute Care Psychiatric Unit, and Community Mental Health

•Demonstrated competency in Mental Health crisis intervention/ psychosocial assessment & other treatment modalities required

•Extensive knowledge of available community resources required

•Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacology required

•Demonstrated working knowledge of co-occurring disorders

•Possesses sound knowledge of the Mental Health act, Vulnerable Peron’s Act, Child & Family Services Act, Protection of Person’s in Care Act

•ASIST certification & NVCI certification or to be obtained within 6 months

•Knowledge of cultural diversity & practices of the population served

•Assertive & self-directed in developing appropriate plans & referrals for patients & families.

•Excellent interpersonal & written and verbal communication skills
