COMPANY: Daunt Books Publishing

NAME: Željka Marosevic

POSITION: Co-Publisher: responsible for acquiring and editing titles, as well as running the company and overseeing sales, publicity and marketing.

WEB: http://www.dauntbookspublishing.co.uk/

PROFILE: Founded in 2010 Daunt Books Publishing is an independent publisher dedicated to publishing brilliant works by exceptional authors from around the world. Whether reissuing beautiful new editions of lost classics, or introducing fresh literary voices, we’re drawn to writing that evokes a strong sense of place – novels, short stories, memoirs, travel accounts in English and in translation. Our authors include classic writers such as Virginia Woolf, Merce Rodoreda and Mark Twain, contemporary writers such as Patrick Modiano, Vivian Gornick and Laura Van Den Berg, and we are well-known for bringing new attention and audiences to undervalued authors in translation, such as Madeleine Bourdouxhe, Jiri Weil and Christa Wolf. Our authors have won prizes including the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize and BBC National Short Story Award. We publish 10-12 titles a year and our publisher is part of Daunt Bookshops, which is the leading and most influential chain of independent bookshops in the country. We are part of the Independent Alliance, a network of independent publishers that includes Faber & Faber, Granta and Profile Books.

TRANSLATED BOOKS: Jiri Weil, Stefan Heym, Christa Wolf, Madeleine Bourdouxhe, Machado de Assis, Merce Rodoreda, Patrick Modiano and Junichiro Tanizaki (forthcoming)

CATALAN AUTHORS PUBLISHED: Merce Rodoreda

FOCUS: My focus of interest is literary fiction and non-fiction in English and in translation. In translation, I look for books which evoke the atmosphere of place, written by strong and fresh literary voices. I am looking for new and emerging authors for our list who we can publish over their careers and make a name for in the UK. As well as this, I’m interested in lost classics that can be revived in the UK, so readers can rediscover significant but forgotten authors. In particular, I’m very keen to discover and publish female authors who were not celebrated enough in their lifetimes or were never read by English readers. We have had great success in championing authors such as Madeleine Bourdouxhe, or bringing a classic Catalan author like Merce Rodoreda to a British audience. At present, we are hoping to grow our number of original translations and I am looking for books that we could match with a translator, to bring into English for the first time.

With nearly two hundred years of history and more than 65 unique imprints around the world, HarperCollins authors include winners of the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the Man Booker Prize. HarperCollins Holland is the Dutch branch office of HarperCollins Publishers. The HC offices have very different profiles all over the world, because they are shaped by what their local editors acquire. I was recruited with the purpose of extending the focus of HarperCollins Holland to upmarket and literary fiction, which has quickly granted us a prominent place in the Dutch literary world. At HarperCollins Holland we publish a broad mix of genres and authors in the areas of general, literary and commercial fiction and narrative non-fiction. With this focus we are now the fastest-growing and most successful HarperCollins branch outside of the UK and US. The Dutch offices have 32 employees and we publish around 130 titles a year.

TRANSLATED BOOKS: Among many others: Alicia Kopf - Germà de Gel (new Catalan acquisition), Dörte Hansen - Altes Land (5000 copies sold, chosen as bookclub book by biggest national book club), Pierre Jarawan - Am Ende Bleiben die Zedern (24.000 copies sold, 10 weeks and counting in bestseller lists), Jeroen Windmeijer - Het Pauluslabyrint (12.000 copies sold, 5 weeks and counting in bestseller lists), Andrea C. Hoffmann - Das Mädchen das den IS besiegte (21.000 copies sold), Andrea C. CATALAN AUTHORS PUBLISHED: Alicia Kopf - Germà de Gel. Two collaborations with Pontas Agency: Federico Axat - La Ultima Salida and Winnie Li - Dark Chapter

FOCUS: My focus in fiction is quite broad, ranging from literary and upmarket to commercial. The reason for that is twofold. Traditionally, the greater part of HarperCollins Holland publishing was general and commercial fiction. On the contrary, my background has a strong literary focus: I studied Literature and Editorship and worked at literary publishing house Prometheus. I was recruited with the purpose of extending the focus of HarperCollins Holland to more upmarket and literary fiction.
My focus in non-fiction is quite specific: narrative non-fiction with a personal touch. We decided to launch a non-fiction list, as we saw many opportunities in this genre in Holland. We are therefore the only HarperCollins branch outside of the US and the UK that is building a non-fiction list. Moreover, I write in this genre myself, so I know the market and the needs of the authors I acquire. (http:// www.atlascontact.nl/auteur/lisanne-mathijssen/)
My heart warms for debutants that show literary competence, who write as if they have always done it, with a fresh voice and a good story. But I never lose sight of the commercial aspect of publishing: stories need to be told, but they also need to be sold. Therefore, I am always looking for well written, smart stories with commercial appeal. I don't shy away from clever psychological suspense either and I like a good time-slip story now and then.

FOCUS: My main professional focus of interest is contemporary literature, building a quality literary fiction programe as an editor, which totals about 25-30 foreign titles per year, within Hena com publishing house. I collaborate with agents, translators and fundations in order to secure an imprint focused on mainly European, not yet translated authors, but also some acclaimed African, Canadian and Asian writers. The importance of the circulation of culture is why I have organized many visits of foreign authors to Zagreb. Croatia is currently at an all time low regarding book sales and it is a challenging task to find subsidies and funding for each and every foriegn title we publish. I have sucessfully been allocating funds for our publications and this is also how I started collaborating with Ramon Llull.
