Community Moodle Quick Guide

General Information /
The LSU Community Moodle instance was designed to provide a location for hosting non-academic online learning environments for LSU associates. The courses to be hosted might include not-for-credit classes, club or organization sponsored areas and online training sites. Courses for which a monetary charge to the participant is required are not housed on Community Moodle.To access Community Moodle, please visit:
Request a Community Moodle course /
To request a Community course, users need only send all relevant information (course name, reason for request, who will be the primary instructor(s)) to the Faculty Technology Center (). For additional information, view GROK article 18664.
Enrollparticipants into your course /
  1. Click on your course and click on Users in the Administration block.
  2. Click on the Enrolled users link which is listed under the Users link.
  3. Click on Enroll users button in the upper right of the screen.
4. Select the role from the Assign Roles drop-down menu at the top of the window.
5. Search for user by name or PAWS ID using the search field at the bottom of the
window.
6. When the results are listed, click on the Enroll button next to the person’s name
and click on the Finish enrolling users button.
NOTE: If the name of the participant does not appear and you see the message 0 users found, check to ensure you have entered the correct PAWS ID. If the PAWS ID is correct, contact the participant and ensure they have logged into the system. Once they log into Community Moodle, their account will be generated and you will be able to add them to your course. For additional information, view GROK article 18665.
EnableSelf Enrollment method / Self enrollment is the method where users can choose to enroll themselves into a course, either immediately by clicking "enroll me in this course" or by typing in an enrollment key they have been given.
  1. Click on your course. In the Administration block, click on Usersthen clickEnrollment methods.
  2. Click the Enable (eye) icon in the Self enrollment row under Edit.
  3. Click theEdit(gear) icon in theSelf Enrollmentrow. You can set up the various options regarding enrollments. It is recommended to set an 'enrollment key' so users need the password in order to get access to the course.
  4. When finished, clickSave Changes

Batch enroll participants into your course via CSV file / 1.Click on your course. Click the edit button at the top right of the screen.From theAdd a Blockdropdown menu, selectEnroll users CSV.
2.The Enroll Users CSVblock should appear in your course. ClickManage Uploaded Files.
3.You will need to create an CSV file with a list of PAWS IDs you would like to Enroll.
NOTE: You do not need a header or any other information. Only users’ PAWS IDs.
4.Upload the CSVfile using theChoose a Filebutton orDrag Dropit into the window.
5.SelectSave Changesat the bottom of your screen.
NOTE:Users who have never logged into Community Moodle will not be able to be enrolled into a course. They must first log in.

Make your course available to participants /
  1. Click on Editsettings in the Administration block.
  2. To the right of Available to students at the top of the page, select the option Show from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on the Save changes button at the bottom of the page.

Create groups and groupings / In Moodle, a group is a collection of students in your course. Instructor in a course can manually or auto-create groups. Agrouping is a collection of groups within a course. This can be useful when directing tasks or making resources available to one or more groups within a course.

Post a file to your course / Click on the Edit button in the upper right of the screen. Drag and drop a file(s) directly into your Moodle course from your computer (feature not available in Internet Explorer). Or:
  1. Click on the Add an activity or resource link and click on File.
  2. Fill in the Name field. (This text will appear as the link to the file.)
  3. Click on the Add button in the Content section.
  4. Click on the Upload a file link. Then click on the Choose File/ Browse button to search for the file on your computer.
  5. After you have selected the file, click on the Upload this file button.
  6. Click on the Save and return to course button at the bottom of the page.

Resources,
activities, & features /
There are over 30 types of resources and activities which can be added to a Moodle course. Commonly used activities and resources at LSU include:
  • File: provide a file as a course resource.
  • URL: provide a web link as a course resource.
  • Kaltura Video Resource: upload a video to stream directly within the browser.
  • Forum: enables participants to have asynchronous discussions.
  • Assignment: provide file submission area for students and enter grades/feedback.
  • Quiz: create quizzes consisting of various questions types.
  • Choice: ask a question and offer a selection of possible responses.
  • Feedback: create a survey to collect feedback from course participants.
  • Turnitin: create a Turnitin assignment which links to the Turnitin interface.
  • Moodle Mail: send any user(s) within a course an email. (GROK article 16666)

Feature highlights /
The Recycle bin allows instructors to restore course content that has been deleted into its original section within the course.Moodle will automatically delete an item from the ‘Recycle bin’ after eight days. For more information, visit GROK article 18562.
The Mass actions block allows instructors to perform actions on multiple items in a course rather than having to do repeated actions on individual items. Actions include indentation, hiding, showing, deleting, moving, and duplicating items. For more information, visit GROK article 18561.
Embed videos in a resource or activity in your course using the Kaltura icon within the text editing toolbar. For more information, visit GROK article 18597.
