For UTHSCSA Students Applying to Community for Children: At the Border and BeyondApplication is open to upper level medical students and residents
2015-2016 Block rotations for this 4-week elective:
- September 28-October 23, 2015
- February 1-February 26, 2016
To Apply►
Please email Dr. Marsha Griffin, Director, Community for Children, to notify her that you are interested in applying for the elective at . Please complete the application form below and email it, along with a copy of your resume or CV, to Judith Livingston, MEd, MCHES, Instructor/Pediatric Projects, at .
Ms. Livingstonwill communicate approval of your request to participate to Jo Ann Lieberman, Academic Coordinator, who will provide you assistance in registering in the UTHSCSA system.Only students serious and committed to this exceptional training and making it a first choice should apply. Because RAHC student housing is limited, application at least two months before the rotation is needed to ensure housing. If you commit to participate in the elective, there is a faculty expectation that you will not drop the course at the last minute which would be at the expense of other students turned away, as well as a serious inconvenience to course planners and community-based organizations with whom Community for Children partners.
Please note the required documents on the application form.
Important facts about the course:
1. The rotation can take up to eight participants.
2. Currently, the political climate is not safe for travel to Mexico. Participants focus on advocacy work in communities along the border, particularly the South Texascolonias. Colonias are impoverished and unincorporated rural settlements along the U.S.-Mexico border that lack one or more elements of basic infrastructure. With limited financial resources, colonia residents resort to designing and building their own homes, a process that can take years and results in makeshift homes. The substandard living conditions created by detrimental housing in colonias have negative implications on the health status of colonia residents, especially among children.
3. Costs: There is no tuition fee for this elective.Students will need to cover their own travel from their home institution to Harlingen/Brownsville and back home. Students will need to cover their food costs and recreation. Housing is provided under the auspices of UTHSCSA RAHC housing. RAHC housing may also ask for a $50 security deposit and $45 cleaning fee, although this has been waived for Community for Children students in the past.
4. Flights: There are several options in flying to Harlingen and Brownsville, Texas. Continental Airlines flies directly into Brownsville. Continental and Southwest Airlines fly into Harlingen, Texas (30 minutes away). Continental and American Airlines fly into McAllen, Texas (30 minutes from Harlingen and 60 minutes away from Brownsville).
