ABOUT RE-SOLV

Re-Solv, a registered charity, is the only organisation working across the UK to prevent volatile substance abuse (VSA) and has over 30 years of experience in this field. Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA), commonly known as solvent abuse, is the deliberate inhalation of gases, aerosols, solvents, petrol and other legal substances to achieve a high. Due to our expertise dealing with ‘legal’ or readily available substances where demand cannot easily be controlled, we also work to prevent the misuse of other ‘legal highs’ and our remit increasingly includes New Psychoactive Substances (NPS). Re-Solv’s prevention work is focused on anyone at risk from these forms of substance abuse, particularly young people.

ABOUT THE RE-SOLV STOKE-ON-TRENT PROJECT

The Community Engagement Officer will be one of the key workers in a new BIG Lottery funded programme that will deliver a community-based approach to prevention. The project is targeted at 11-25 year olds and also aims to raise awareness of the issue among parents/carers and key community groups. The project aims to bring the whole community together in Stoke on Trent (SOT) to raise awareness of all ‘legal highs’ and prevent deaths from them. Key ‘at risk’ groups will be targeted alongside a general programme of community awareness and support.

A key part of the project will be to engage with, train, and support professionals and community members about both ‘legal highs’ (New Psychoactive Substances) and solvent abuse (Volatile Substance Abuse). The Community Engagement Officer will work with community organisations to upskill them and link together local agencies so there is a support network of relevant agencies around individuals at risk of or actively misusing these substances.

The Community Engagement Officer will work with the groups to determine what support will be most beneficial and how Re-Solv can help them to deliver solutions.
