Role Overview:
The Education Specialist will work as a part of a multi-skilled team to develop education and outreach programs and ensure the new programs align with CSIRO Education’s strategic directions as well as support the delivery of programs and build relationships with CSIRO Business Units.
The role is part of a national team, and will work closely with the other program and project teams to develop and implement education programs based on best-practice and demonstrated outcomes in STEM education.
The primary responsibilities of the role will be to (a) develop education programs for teachers, students and the community; and (b) deliver education and outreach programs as required, and to ensure that new and ‘revamped’ programs meet the requirements of users.
This role will involve travel to local and regional locations.
Duties and Key Result Areas:
Working collaboratively, the position will be required to:
- Develop education and outreach programs including teacher professional development, school experience, digital and community.
- Work with other education and outreach teams as well as CSIRO business units to develop and support the implementation of education and outreach programs.
- Develop customised resources to support the objectives of CSIRO Education and Outreach, CSIRO Services and CSIRO’s 2020 Strategy.
- Work with teachers to ensure that programs developed are appropriate and useful for use in schools.
- Assist in the delivery of education and outreach programs.
- Participate in regular team meetings.
- Work flexibly, collaboratively and responsively across the team and with CSIRO Business Units to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.
- Other duties as required.
Selection Criteria:

Pre-Requisites:
- Education/Qualification: Atertiary qualification in STEM, STEM education or science communication, or equivalent experience.
- Behaviours: A history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.
- Adaptability: Demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity, adapting to changing circumstances and new responsibilities and maintain professionalism and flexibility.
- Demonstrated experience delivering or developing education programs or resources, including broad experience working with teachers or scientists, and an understanding of the Australian Curriculum and issues facing school science education.
- High level written and oral communication skills in a variety of formats including digital delivery for a range of audiences.
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment, proactively collaborating and consulting with internal and external stakeholders, as well as sharing resources to accomplish objectives.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to find workable solutions to complex problems and resolve complaints using creativity, reasoning and past experience.
- Experience in strategic planning and implementation.
- Good understanding of the diversity of Science undertaken at CSIRO and its place in the national research agenda.
- A current driver’s licence and the ability to travel locally and to regional locations.
- A valid Working with Children Check or equivalent, and an AFP National Police Check or the willingness and ability to gain both.
