Widgets are the single most important element of our ecosystem. They come in many shapes and sizes and live in many different environments and climates. In the ponds and pools they often call their home, widgets produce oxygen and help prevent the greenhouse effect by producing deionized methane. Without widgets, life as we know it would not continue, so a law should be passed for their protection.

Many different ecosystems are benefited by the widget. One researcher says, “Widgets grow in copious amounts near any source of available water” (“Widgets”). Their abundance shows that they are a strong and renewable form of life. If widgets were to decrease in amount, there would be an obvious change to an ecosystem. It has been proven that many other forms of life feed off of this important plant (Johnson). Fish, insects, and algae need widgets in order to live and reproduce. An elimination of widgets would negatively affect the populations of other forms of life. Without the widget, ecosystems would be forever altered.

Global warming due to the greenhouse effect would be increased if widgets did not exist. Widgets help reverse the greenhouse effect through the production of beneficial gasses (Widgets and the Life they Support). It would be catastrophic if people did not do their best to protect this plant, and our lifestyles will change if society does not take their safety seriously. As Professor Williams stated in his article, without these tiny organisms “life as we know it would be changed forever” (14). Widgets affect more than their nearby surroundings; they are so important to human life that they can be considered friends that society must look out for and protect.

Another benefit that widgets provide is the prevention of erosion. Widgets grow near sources of water and help to stabilize the banks at the edge of pools and rivers. Widgets help to prevent ecological damage in sensitive wetlands by “prevent[ing] erosion and promot[ing] stabilization of the banks of rivers . . . the roots hold the soil together” (Johnson). Disastrous floods would result without widgets to protect the surrounding areas. They are essential in protecting entire river systems and flood plains.

Widgets are an abundant form of plant life. They help other living things. The gasses that they produce help all beings on the planet. They also provide needed stabilization to prevent disaster. People need to act now to ensure the survival of this important flora. Widgets might not be the most important form of life in an ecosystem, but without them the world would not be the same.
