First Grade Open Court - Unit 1

Unit 1, Sharing Stories, has many poems so it is a good time to focus on the difference between different text types (RL5). Concentrate on features of informational and narrative text and how they differ. Teach lessons to define words such as “Fiction/Non-Fiction”, “realistic/make-believe” ,“illustrations/text” and “text evidence”. By end of unit, students should be able to identify a story vs. informational text and explain the major differences between the two. *Need to incorporate some informational read alouds during this unit to teach the difference.

·  RL5 - What is it about how the page looks that gives you a clue that the selection is narrative/informational?

·  RL5 - Point out features of the text that show it is a poem.
