Student Presentation

§  Principles of Engineering: Control Systems (Marble Sorters) – Eric Hackler and James McDonald shared their control systems project that sorted marbles by color. Each student explained the overall design of their system and sorted some marbles for the board.

§  Digital Electronics: Seven Segment Displays (Birthday Project) – Daniel Justiss presented his impressive bead board project and explained the design process behind creating the seven-segment display.

Program Updates

§  Jill Siler gave an overview of the 2008-2009 Recruitment Process (Counselors Lunch, Course Fair), highlighted the new Institutes Brochure as well as the new courses for 08-09.

§  Scott Berry discussed the newest PLTW course to be launched in 2008-2009: Civil Engineering & Architecture

§  Jana Schmidt discussed the new strand with the Institute of Math, Engineering & Architecture: Architectural Studies with a new course for 2008-2009: Architectural Graphics. This course will be articulated with ACC.

§  Jana Schmidt gave an overview on the state of Texas PLTW Leadership as she presented at the state conference earlier this month and participated on the leadership panel as well.

§  The PLTW Certification Pre-Assessment has been submitted and LTHS should undergo a site visit in early May to complete the certification process.

§  Jill Siler shared about the upcoming E3 Engineering Articulation Launch on March 19th where central Texas high school PLTW Engineering programs, post-secondary partners and industry members will gather to discuss how to strengthen the STEM pipeline, build stronger articulation agreements and share best practices.

§  Jill Siler also shared the outstanding news that both Jana Schmidt and Scott Berry were awarded the Building the Future national award by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Both Jana and Scott and their spouses will be flown to Minneapolis in April for the gala where the 15 national winners will be honored. Congratulations Jana and Scott!!!!

Spring Semester Plans: Jana and Scott highlighted their spring semester curriculum so that board members could see where/how they might fit in to enrich the program.

Principles of Engineering

§  Feb/March: Career Fields (Aerospace, Agricultural, Architectural, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, Nuclear, etc.)

§  March: Engineering Systems (thermodynamics, fluid systems, electrical systems, control systems)

§  April/May: Materials, Reliability, Kinematics

Digital Electronics

§  Feb/March: DeMorgan, Programmable Logic Devices (PLD), Binary Addition/Subtraction

§  March/April: Latches, Flip/Flops

§  April/May: Timers, etc.

Invitation for Involvement

Jill Siler overviewed various opportunities for Community / Industry members to get involved in the Institute of Math, Engineering & Architecture. This spring we will be launching a Guest Lecture Series where we’ll be bringing in guest speakers during “Go Time” – common mtg time at the high school for students to attend. We also offered opportunities for classroom visits and summer job-shadowing, internships and field trips. Please fill out the attached handout if interested in getting involved!!!
