Cross-Cultural Communication Matrix

Use the matrix to complete the country information. Write 3-4 sentences for each item.

b.  Click on the map on the lower left corner of the page. Select three regions of the world to research by clicking on the map. Select one country from each of the three regions you selected to research. The Web site provides you with a good starting point. You may also want to use a general Internet search to find additional information.

c.  Include APA formatted references on a separate page.

CANADA / Spoken: English and French are mainly spoken. Business people are generally polite and easy going. The communication style in Canada is essentially pragmatic and relies on common sense. / Mostly used to add emphasis and is not used much. / Usually begin meetings with minimal small talk. Meetings are usually well organized and on schedule. / Be prepared and make sure facts and figures are accurate. Canadians are rational and logical and are not convinced on emotions, passions, or feelings. If a promise is made, it is expected to be kept.
Be aware of body language and do your homework on any culture you are not familiar with.
Make sure all facts and numbers are correct. Be calm, polite and respectful as with all cultures.
CHINA / Spoken/non-verbal. The style of communication in China is paralinguistic which is when the volume of the speaker increases and the tone of voice becomes high. / Facial expression, tone of voice, gesture, and eye contact. / Greetings begin with a handshake and a slight nod of the head. Body posture is formal and attentive. Meetings must be made in advance.
AUSTRALIA / Spoken: English. The style of communication in Australia is casual and relaxed / Simple handshake and a smile is usually the non-verbal communication that may go on in Australia. / Prefer first name basis. Appointments are necessary. Emotions and feelings are not important. Facts and figures are. Punctuality is also important.
