Subject: Johnny’s Progress in School

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Gary Parry:

Since our conversation during Parent-Teacher conferences on March 13th, 2008, I have noticed that Johnny is still struggling with his school work. During our last meeting I discussed with you the possibility of holding Johnny back one year to repeat the third-grade. I believe that this option has become necessary and know that it will only improve Johnny’s skills and development.

There are a few options for your son at this point. Any option you choose will benefit Johnny, so please decide on the option that works best for your family.

  • Johnny can repeat the third-grade in my classroom
  • Johnny can repeat the third-grade in Mrs. Goodheart’s classroom
  • Johnny can be home-schooled.

Having Johnny homeschooled is something that we discussed during our last meeting. Although it is a great way for you to spend more time with your son as you suggested, I would prefer him to be in my classroom again next year. I believe that Johnny has a lot of potential and I would look forward to working with him as a second year teacher. Being a first year teacher this year has been hard on me as well as my students. Teaching Johnny for a second time would benefit him as well as myself as a teacher.

I have already started his portfolio and know his learning capabilities. Johnny is a great student and I feel that one more year in the third-grade will not hinder his future school work or friendships. Having Johnny in my classroom for one more year would mean that I would be able to work closely with him on school work that he is struggling with now. Knowing his strengths and weaknesses is an advantage and would aid in the future development of his learning.

Again, the decision is purely yours, but I feel that this is the best option for your sons’ future. Please let me know of your decision during our next meeting on June 5th, 2008. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at (406) 748-1131. You may also contact me through e-mail at . I look forward to seeing you again during our end of the year party in our classroom on June 4th, 2008. It has been a pleasure working with you this year and I look forward to another.

Sincerely,

Mrs. JoAnna Carlson
