Colony Brochure Project

You are the governor of the above named colony. One of your responsibilities is to attract new settlers to live and work in your colony. You have decided that one of the best ways to get people interested in your colony is to create a brochure that tells them how wonderful life is in your colony. Follow the directions below to create the most effective brochure that you can!

Materials: 12” x 18” drawing paper, pencil, crayons or colored pencils, pen (for final writing)

Panel A - Cover

This is the cover of your brochure. Make sure to feature the name of your colony in large colorful letters. Spell it correctly! What kind of images can you add to the cover that will make people want to come to your colony? Think of unique ways to attract the attention of possible new colonists, because many time people do judge a book by its cover! Create and add a slogan to give potential colonists an idea of what your colony is about.

o  Colony name – big and colorful!

o  Attractive images that would give potential colonists a good first impression of your colony

o  A catchy slogan that’s unique to the personality of your colony

Panel B – Sales Pitch

This is where you will make your case to people that you have the best colony and that all other colonies could only ever be second place or worse. You need to write two paragraphs persuading people that they should build a new life in your colony. Tell them only the positives here, and focus on ways that their life will improve by joining you in the New World. The things that you learn while creating panels C, D, and E will give you facts that you can use here, so you should do this panel last. Under your persuasive paragraphs, you should include a drawing that would help someone imagine themselves living in your colony, like a happy colonial family, or smiling, hard-working farmers. The title for this panel should be your colony name, followed by a colon and the slogan from the cover.

o  Title—colony name and slogan (example—New York: At Least We’re Not New Jersey!)

o  Two paragraphs of persuasive writing that is filled with facts from the other panels

o  Colorful drawing showing how great life in your colony is

Panel C – History and Map

Here you will write a short history of your colony, including the date it was established, who founded it, and why it was established. If your colony split off from another colony, include that information here. Use your resources to gather information for your history. It should be about four sentences long. Below the history, create a map of your colony. It should be colorful and have at least one important town and one or two important bodies of water identified. Make a map key to feature the name and identify your symbols for bodies of water and towns. Put a frame around the map.

o  Section Title – History of ______( ß Colony Name )

o  History – four or five sentences long

o  Date of establishment

o  Who founded the colony

o  Why it was founded

o  How was it established (split off, given by king, etc.)

o  Map

o  Shape of colony

o  Major bodies of water

o  Major town

o  Map key (symbols and colony name)

Panel D – Natural Resources

Give an explanation of your colony’s geography. Are there a lot of forests? Access to fish-filled lakes and oceans? Have minerals been found? Use your history book, the internet, and other books to gather information about your colony’s natural resources. Write two or three sentences about the resources your colony has available, then create four or five drawings of the resources below your sentences and label each resource.

o  Section Title – Natural Resources

o  Two or three sentences about resources

o  Four or five drawings of resources, with labels.

Panel E – Daily Life

What is life like in your colony? What do families do? Is there a prominent religion in our colony? How does the local government work? How do the colonists earn their money (Fishing? Cutting timber? Trading goods? Plantations?) Tell that story here. Give as much information as you can about daily life in your colony, and in the colonies in general. Use your study resources to gather this information, and write four or five sentences about life in your colony. Create colorful illustrations for two or three of these activities and label them.

o  Section Title – Daily Life in ______( ß Colony Name )

o  Four or five sentences about daily life in your colony

o  Two or three colorful illustrations with labels.

Panel X – Bibliography and Authorship
