Prompt:

Using evidence from the text, explain how the historical and cultural background of the Anglo-Saxons influences the language and plot of Beowulf. Be sure to discuss and make connections between the epic oral tradition and written epic (hint: kennings).

Paper Must Include:

  • Discuss the influence of the many wars, invasions, and bloody conflicts
  • Use examples from the Anglo-Saxons and from Beowulf
  • Paragraph 2: Spread of Christianity
  • Discuss the influence of Christianity on the Anglo-Saxons
  • Use examples of Christianity found Beowulf
  • Paragraph 3: Epic Tradition
  • Discuss how the importance of epics is depicted in Beowulf
  • Use examples like kennings and from the celebrations in the story

CSQT Notes

  • CLAIM: also known as a thesis statement, this is your topic sentence. Your claim restates the prompt and provides your position that you will prove throughout the rest of your paragraph.
  • SET-UP: show me where you got your evidence came from. Examples include titles, authors, pages, lines, and paragraphs. Remember this is not a stand-alone sentence; it is just the beginning of your sentence when you introduce your quote.
  • QUOTE: include the quote that supports your claim. Make sure you properly use quotation marks and don’t just restate them.Don’t use really long quotes! Just what you need to prove your point.
  • TIE-IN: This is where you explain your quote and tell us what it means. Explain how it relates to your claim and how it proves your point. This is the most important section because here is where you make the connection between the text and the claim. This is the longest section of the paragraph.

Extra Credit

  • The “Book End” (10 points each): Student has extended their paper to include complete Introduction and Conclusion paragraphs (4-5 sentences each).
  • The “Extra Mile” (20points): Student has written a FOURTH body paragraph discussing the influence of the Anglo-Saxons on the movie clip from Beowulf.
