Guidelines for Applicants

The College of Physical Sciences Postgraduate Scholarships available are listed below. They will all be awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstration of particular personal characteristics (please see general terms and conditions for full details).

*The only exception to this is the Subsea UK Subsea Engineering MSc Scholarship which is awarded on the basis of academic merit, demonstration of particular personal characteristics and financial need.

To be considered for any of these scholarships you will need to have applied to the University of Aberdeen for a place on an eligible postgraduate degree programme starting in September 2014. To be awarded a scholarship you must receive and then firmly accept an unconditional offer of a place on an eligible postgraduate degree programme.

Please note that any number of scholarships can be applied for by submitting ONE application form. Priority will be given to students not already in receipt of a scholarship for their postgraduate studies. Students are not able to hold more than one corporate funded scholarship at any one time.

  • The Fugro Subsea Services Ltd. Subsea Engineering Scholarship

There is one Fugro Subsea Services Ltd. Subsea Engineering Scholarship available. The successful applicant will receive £6,000 for the one year duration of the MSc in Subsea Engineering degree which will contribute towards their maintenance costs.

Features of the Fugro Subsea Services Ltd. Subsea Engineering Scholarship are: financial support as detailed above, mentoring, and provision of an industrially-focused project for MSc project.

Eligibility criteria:

The scholarship is open to UK and EU students commencing the one year full-time MSc in Subsea Engineering in September 2014. (Please note that the scholarship is not open to students wishing to commence the part-time distance learning programme).

Candidates:

Only applicants domiciled in the UK or EUand classified as Home or RUK Fees are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

  • The LRF MSc Safety & Reliability Engineering for Oil & Gas Scholarships

Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) which supports the Centre for Safety and Reliability Engineering within the School of Engineering will fundthree scholarships of £15,000 which will contribute towards fees and maintenance costs (subject to satisfactory progress).

Eligibility criteria:

The scholarships are open to all students commencing the one year full-time MSc in Safety & Reliability Engineeringfor Oil & Gas starting in September 2014. (Please note that the scholarships are not open to students wishing to commence the part-time programme.)

Candidates:All students meeting the criteria, regardless of nationality, are eligible to apply for the scholarships – they are open to UK, EU and International students.

Those applicants who are required to meet International fees will be asked to pay 40% of their fees from their own resources with 60% being met by the scholarship and the balance forming a small monthly stipend, subject to satisfactory progress on the programme.

  • OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships

There are two OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships available. The successful applicants will each receive £6,000 for the one year duration of the MSc in Safety and Reliability Engineering for Oil & Gas degree. The scholarships will contribute towards the students’ fees and maintenance costs.

Eligibility criteria:

The scholarships are open to all students commencing the one year full-time MSc in Safety & Reliability Engineering for Oil & Gas in September 2014. (Please note that the scholarships are not open to students wishing to commence the part-time programme).

In addition, the scholars’ dissertations must address the issue of ‘safety in the oil and gas industry’. The dissertation of the scholarship recipient obtaining the highest mark will receive a further £500.

Candidates:

All students meeting the criteria, regardless of nationality, are eligible to apply for the scholarships – they are open to UK, EU and International students.

  • Subsea UK Subsea Engineering MSc Scholarship

There is one Subsea UK Subsea Engineering MSc Scholarship available. The successful applicant will receive £8,000 for the one year duration of the MSc in Subsea Engineering degree which will contribute towards the student’s maintenance costs.

Eligibility criteria:

The scholarship is open to UK students commencing the one year full-time MSc in Subsea Engineering in September 2014. (Please note that the scholarship is not open to students wishing to commence the part-time programme).

Candidates:

Only applicants domiciled in the UK and classified as Home or RUK Fees are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

  • The Talisman SinopecMSc Scholarship

There is one Talisman Sinopec MSc Scholarship available. The scholarship is valued at £15,000 for the one year duration of the MSc degree course. This will cover Home or RUK postgraduate tuition fees, and will provide a maintenance stipend.

Features of the Talisman Sinopec Scholarship are: financial support as detailed above, the opportunity to receive mentoring from Talisman Sinopec staff, invitations for scholars to relevant events and the opportunity to interview for a summer placement.

Eligibility criteria:

The scholarship is open to UK and EU students commencing one of the following one year full time MSc degree programmes in September 2014:-

MSc Safety & Reliability Engineering for Oil & Gas

MSc Oil & Gas Engineering

MSc Renewable Energy Engineering

MSc Subsea Engineering

MSc Oil & Gas Enterprise Management

MSc Integrated Petroleum Geoscience

(Please note that the scholarship is not open to students wishing to commence any of the above degree programmes on a part-time basis).

Candidates:

Only applicants domiciled in the UK or EU and classified as Home or RUK Fees are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, no less than a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent.

General Terms andConditions for all the College of Physical Sciences Postgraduate Scholarships

A scholarship panel will consider the applications and short-list potential candidates for each scholarship. The companies may be invited to interview the short-listed candidates. Once all interviews are completed, the panel will make the awards, taking into account the companies feedback.

The College of Physical Sciences Postgraduate Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstration of particular personal characteristics. Academic merit will be judged on previous years’ academic performance. In respect of personal characteristics, applicants should be able to show, through submission of a personal statement (on the application form), that they:

  • Are enthusiastic, ambitious,highly motivated and determined to succeed academically and professionally
  • Have a strong commitment to self-development and take a pro-active and committed approach to their education.
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Are good team players and demonstrate team working skills.
  • Have an awareness of, and interest in, the energy industry and their chosen field of study.

The scholarship will be subject to the scholarship recipient successfully completing their degree to the satisfaction of the appropriate School. The scholarship will lapse if the scholar ceases to study an eligible degree programme or leaves the University of Aberdeen. Where a scholarship recipient is required to repeat any part of their programme because they failed to reach the academic requirements of the programme, payment will not be made until progression has been made; resumption of the scholarship will be based on individual circumstances and will be at the discretion of the Head of School. The scholarship can only be held by students of the University – they cannot be transferred to another institution.

Events and Reports

Scholarship recipients are expected to attend the annual Corporate Scholars’ Reception and any other events related to the Scholarships Programme, which provide the donors and scholars with the opportunity to meet each other. You will also be required to write a short annual report at the end of the academic year which is to be submitted to the University of Aberdeen Development Trust who will forward it to the donor. The Development Trust will provide a standard template for the report.

Deadline for applications

The closing date for applications is Friday 18th July 2014.

Notification of Awards

You will be told whether or not your application has been successful by email by 8 August2014.

If you are currently studying at the University of Aberdeen, please supply these details. If you are currently studying at another educational institution, please give these details. Please also give dates of attendance.

If you are a current University of Aberdeen student, please provide your current University of Aberdeen student ID number, and when your studies commenced.

If you are not a current University of Aberdeen student, please provide your University of Aberdeen Applicant Reference Number (this is the 10 digit number which you will find on any correspondence you have received from the Admissions department) for the postgraduate application you have made.

Degree Programme you are studying/applying for

Please write the name of the postgraduate degree course you have applied for at the University of Aberdeen.

Please select the scholarship(s) you are applying for. Please only select the College of Physical Sciences Postgraduate Scholarships that you are eligible to apply for.

In no more than 1500 words, please give reasons why you believe you should be considered for an award. You should tell us why you have chosen the postgraduate degree course that you have applied for and say something about your experience and interests.

The College of Physical Sciences Postgraduate Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstration of particular personal characteristics. Please write about your academic achievements and show how you demonstrate the required personal characteristics.

Please write about your academic achievements - please list your College and University academic qualification/s (including qualification (i.e. Degree and subject), classification, awarding institution and award date). If you are currently in the final year of your undergraduate degree and therefore hold a conditional offer of a place on the postgraduate degree course that you have applied for, please advise your predicted degree result. You should also list any prizes or awards you have gained for academic performance or in employment, or for other skills or achievements.

Please show how you demonstrate the required personal characteristics (as listed in the General Terms and Conditions section).

*If you are applying for the OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Scholarship, please also demonstrate that you have an awareness of, and interest in, safety and issues affecting and impacting on safety in the oil and gas industry.

If you have applied for any other scholarships (which you have listed in ‘Previous Scholarships’ section of the application form), please indicate whether the application(s) is/are pending, or if an award has been made. If the award is pending, please indicate when you expect to hear from the awarding body.

Please give information on your employment history and list employer, positions held or work experience, along with relevant dates. Please also tell us about any activity you take part in which you feel is relevant to your studies.

*One of the conditions of the Subsea UK Subsea Engineering MSc Scholarship is the ability to demonstrate need for financial support. Therefore, if you are applying for this scholarship, please also provide full details of your financial circumstances i.e. all sources of your own household income and expenditure. Please also advise how you intend to fund your postgraduate studies.

Please note that the maximum word limit for the personal statement is 1500 words and your application will not be considered if you exceed this. The maximum file size for the personal statement is 1MB and you will not be able to complete the application if you exceed this.

-Referee Details:

Please provide the name, position and contact details of oneacademic referee who may be approached to comment on your academic achievement.

Please do not include a reference letteras we will check this from your Application Form for Postgraduate Studies.

-Supporting documentation:

Please uploadyour supporting documentation. Please note that you can only upload a maximum of 2 documents. The maximum file size is 1MB per document. Please do not exceed this limit as you will not be able to complete the application if any of your files are over 1MB.
