Formative Assessment Assignments

Course Textbook: Classroom Assessment for student Learning- Doing It Right- Using It Well

First: Read Chapters 1 and 2 pages 1 – 36.

Second: Write a reflection for your Homework folder:

List the “five keys” to Quality Classroom Assessment. Reflect on and explain the following two ideas:

  • One “key” that is a strength in your classroom practice
  • One “key” that you would like to embed into your classroom practice.

Smarter Balanced Assignments

Read and highlight “Assessing Students’ Mathematical Proficiency on the Common Core” and “Summary of Core Components.”

Formative Assessment Assignments:

First: Read the article from your class binder, Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards Through Classroom Assessment. Highlight important ideas throughout the reading.

Second: Using landscape format, divide a 9 by 11 sheet of clean white paper into 9 sections. In each of six sections, write a quote from the article that is an important idea to ponder. Three of the boxes should remain blank.

Smarter Balanced Assignments:

Read and highlight PARCC Model Content Frameworks p. 12-14

Read and highlight Content Framework for your grade level and the grade above and below. The various grade levels begin on page 15.

Formative Assessment Assignments:

First: Choose a unit from your math textbook that you will be teaching in the fall of the year, and is an important unit for your grade level. You will be studying this unit tonight and will continue studying it as you complete your assignment in the syllabus entitled, Formative Assessment Learning Targets Individual Project.

Second: Read the lessons in the unit to understand the development of the mathematics in the unit. Choose the lessons from the unit you will study (5 to 8 lessons).

For homework tonight you will begin a preliminary study of the unit.

1) Study the first three lessons, you chose from the unit, and write a learning target for the lessons. Depending on the three lessons you may have one to three targets.

2) Read Chapter 3 Clear Targets pages 42 – 82. Highlight important ideas focused on the “types” of learning targets.

Smarter Balanced Assignments:

Review all notes and readings for class. Formulate, write down, and be prepared to share 3-5 ideas to support your district’s Team Project – Smarter Balanced work that will take place tomorrow.
