College & Career Center News – SRVHS Friday eBulletin – Sept. 1, 2017

College and Career Center hours are 7:30a.m. to 3:30p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.The center is closed on Fridays. Please encourage your students to stop in at lunch or brunch with questions, or make appointments with us to have longer discussions during the school day.

NAVIANCE: Please remind your students to check their Naviance portal frequently for scheduled COLLEGE VISITS, as they will sign up to participate via their Naviance Portal.TIP for students re:Colleges I am Thinking About…If you have colleges on this list in your Naviance portal, you will receive an email if a rep from that college signs up to visit SRVHS. So, build your lists and be informed! . For Naviancequestions, please email us and we will do what we can to assist.

SENIORS: See our postings on the College and Career Center pages of the school’s website for tips on starting/continuing your college research and applications.

·Your counselors will be coming into your English classes in a couple of weeks to review the college application process with you. Be thinking of your questions!

·Remember to sign up for College Visits on Naviance (College page) and print the confirmation page/pass. Ask your teacher for signature approval to miss class at the time of the visit (if it is not a lunch time visit) and bring your signed page to the visit. If it is a lunch time visit, no signature is necessary, but please sign up and print and bring the confirmation page with you to the visit.

The PSAT will be administered atSRVHSon Sat., October 14th and space is limited.PSAT registration is OPEN now for Juniorsand will be open to other students as of Sept. 2nd! Access the registration link from the SRVHS website home page (left side under “News”).The PSAT is a preliminary test to introduce junior students to the SAT test and the score does not get reported to colleges. PSAT results can be a valuable tool in helping juniors prepare for the official SAT. High scoring students may potentially qualify for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. College Visits to SRVHS. We are scheduling college visits daily, and all are posted on the COLLEGES page of the students’ Naviance portal. The UCLA visit that is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 5th at 11 a.m. has been moved to the LIBRARY to be able to host more students. Pre-registration is required and is limited to 70 attendees. Be sure to sign up on your Colleges page and print the confirmation page to be signed by your 3rd period teacher. Bring this signed page to the visit to be admitted. (Note: UCLA will also be at the College Night event on Oct. 25 at Monte Vista, so you may also talk to the rep there.) This sign up procedure will be the same for all college visits! You MUST have pre-registered for all visits!

Other upcoming College Visits to SRVHS include: UCLA, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Franklin U of Switzerland, U of TN, U of St. Andrews, U of the Pacific, Boston College, Dominican U, Hawaii Pacific, U of Tampa and many, many more… Sign up on Naviance to attend! New visits are added daily!!

Regional College Visits. Many colleges cannot visit every high school, so often hold regional visits in a single Bay Area location (i.e. a hotel). If there is a particular college you wish to learn about, and they are not coming to SRVHS or you cannot miss class to attend their visit, be sure to search the college’s website for regional events. Many colleges host them in SF, Berkeley, San Jose, Santa Clara, etc. Students and parents may sign up on their specific websites.

Chapman University is hosting Prospective Student Admissions Interviews in Walnut Creek on Oct. 7 and 8. Pre-registration is necessary and interviews are open to graduating seniors only. Go to:

Mark your calendar for a California State University (CSU) College Fair on Sept. 27 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.The time is not yet confirmed, but it will be an evening event. Save the date….ALL 23 CSU’s will be there!

The SRVHS Academic Boosters* organization is offering the following test prep and application workshops for students in the coming months.View the detailsandREGISTER on the SRVHS websiteby clicking on the yellow"Booster Groups" button, then clicking on "Academic Boosters". A couple upcoming events are below:

·Saturday 9/9 (9a-1:30 p) - MOCK ACT/SAT combo test (feedback session 9/19)

Combined ACT/SAT practice test to give students a sense of the questions and format for each. Cost is $30. Target: Juniorswanting to understand differences between the exams.This test is offered again in Spring for Sophomores.

·Monday 9/11 (6-8 p.m)- Essay writing for the College Application

Gain an understanding of what makes a successful college application essay (do’s and don’ts, showing vs telling). Examine the UC and the Common App prompts.Seniors Only: Inc. 1 online essay review

Job Board & Work Permits!Stop by the center to check out our job board. We are receiving new postings each day. Work permit applications are available in the C/Career Center on the front desk. We process them M, T, W and Th and completed permits may be picked up during office hours. On Friday, they may be picked up in Attendance. Permit applications dropped off on Thursday after lunch, will be ready on Monday.

Volunteer! Spectrum of Science Foundation is looking for volunteers to assist with their Oct. 7 and 8 events in Livermore and Dublin.HOSA, a student volunteer organization associated with John Muir Hospital in Concord is accepting new members at their meeting on Sept. 21.
