COLLEGE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM - Freshman Bulletin

College bound freshman should be giving serious thought to what is necessary for you to get into college. Here are some facts to help you on your way.

FACTS FOR FRESHMEN:

·  Get good grades! All grades count from 9th grade on! Don’t forget, midterm and final grades are very important also.

·  Make sure you are taking courses necessary to satisfy college requirements – and take as challenging courses as possible!

·  Take the PSAT or PLAN in October of 10th grade. These are practice tests for the SAT or ACT.

·  Get to know your counselor!

·  Join some clubs or athletic teams – get really involved in a few, rather than just being a member of many.

·  READ the CAP Bulletins – this monthly bulletin will let you know valuable current information such as college visits, local college fairs, scholarship opportunities, etc. The CAP Bulletin will be posted on the MKHS website every month.

·  LISTEN to homeroom announcements to hear of upcoming college events.

·  Plan to take the PSAT in October of your junior year; this is the only way to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship.

·  You may want to take SAT II’s in the spring of your sophomore year; depending on what courses you are taking. Ask your counselor.

·  Make sure you have Florida Bright Futures Scholarship requirements. See your counselor to be sure.

·  Begin attending college fairs and college visits around South Florida, and make plans to visit the campuses of colleges you are really interested in.

·  Plan your summers wisely: volunteer, attend a college summer program, go to summer school or work.

·  READ, READ, READ – you will build your vocabulary, which will help in school and on college tests. Use the dictionary to look up any words you don’t know. It helps.

·  Beware of scholarship and college scams!

·  Save money for college!
