E-mail: ,
Abstract. The article presents data on vascular plant collection from Vietnam stored at Foreign Asia section of the Moscow State University (MSU) Herbarium named after D.P. Syreishchikov (MW) by January 1, 2010. Collection includes 1607 specimens from 135 families and 382 genera. The article contains data on collectors, places of collection and information on number of genera and families presented in the collection. The essential part of the collection makes specimens collected by Nickolaj G. Prilepsky at Ma Da forestland (Dong Nai province, South Vietnam) and Bien Lac – Nui Ong forestry (Binh Thuan province).
Keywords: Vietnam, flora, Herbarium of Moscow State University (MSU), collection, collectors.
The purpose of the present article is generalization of data on collection of specimens from Vietnam stored at Foreign Asia section of the Moscow State University (MSU) Herbarium named after D.P. Syreishchikov by January 1, 2010. The Herbarium is known as «Moscow University Herbarium»[1] and has its own international acronym – MW. Moscow University Herbarium is the oldest of now existing Herbariums in Russia (was founded in 1765). It occupies the second place (after the Herbarium of Botanical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences named after V.L. Komarov in Saint Petersburg), as far as size and scientific significance are concerned, among main Herbariums of Russia (Balandin, 2006). Collections of the MSU Herbarium include more than 900 thousand specimens (mosses and liverworts included), many of which have grate scientific, historical and cultural value. In the resolution of the international conference «Conservation of botanical collections» that took place under the auspices of UNESCO and International Council of Scientific Unions (Saint Petersburg, 8-10 December 1993) the MSU Herbarium is recognized as an Institution with collections of world significance (Balandin, 2004). One of the most interesting collections of the MSU Herbarium is the collection of Vietnamese flora[2] being the part of Foreign Asia section.
By January 1, 2010 the Foreign Asia (without Mongolia, Central Asia and Kazakhstan) collection included 17458 specimens from 6743 species, 2323 genera and 328 families. Vietnamese collection (with exchange pool) by January 1, 2010 enumerated 1607 specimens. As a result of inventory work at Moscow University Herbarium (Foreign Asia section) as well as on the basis of literary sources, the authors of the present article have composed a database on all Vietnamese specimens. It includes the following data: sheet number according to Herbarium Index, family name, specific name (or generic name in case of incomplete identification), all possible synonyms according to literary sources listed in this article, life form of plants, geographical names of collection points with indication of provinces, districts etc., geographical coordinates, plant community names, collector names, date of collection and different comments.
The following list includes collectors of Vietnamese flora whose collections are located in the MSU Herbarium with comments on place and date of collection and number of sheets:

The most essential part of Vientamese flora herbarium is composed by specimens collected by N.G. Prilepsky. This part of herbarium was collected during the period when he worked as a researcher within South department of Russian-Vietnamese Tropical Center. The research was conducted since July 1995 till May 1996 mainly at Ma Da forest (Dong Nai province) in the neighborhood of «Ma Da» Field ecological station. The purpose of his work was to study diversity of plants and plant communities of South Vietnam. Comparative study of vegetation of forest edges, forest gaps, forest tracks, clear cuts and processes of their regeneration was conducted (Prilepsky, 1997).
Ma Da forest is closed humid flat (not higher than 50 m above sea level) forest with the predominance of Dipterocarpus dyeri Pierre. The remaining fragments of dipterocarpus forest are characterized by multilevel structure of forest stand and high floristic diversity. There are 4-5 underlevels in forest stand of such forests. More than 400 tree species (among them 140 being background ones) and 130 species of lianas are present in the composition of dipterocarpus forest. The second and third underlevels are characterized by maximal diversity. Numerous epiphytes and hemiepiphytes occur in crowns and on trunks of trees. Herb layer in forest is fragmentary because of high shade at soil surface (Kuznetsov, 2003а).
Part of specimens were collected by N.G. Prilepsky during short-term expedition to Bien Lac –
Nui Ong forestry (Binh Thuan province) in September 1995 as well as in Vung Tau neigborhood (Ba Ria – Vung Tau province) in 1995-1996. He determined the majority of collected specimens. Plus to this he determined specimens collected by O.P. Lichnova in December 1995 and N.V. Belyaeva in April 1995 and March 1996 at Da Lat mountain plateau in Lam Dong province (mainly specimens from Cong Troi notch). The specimens were determined with the help of “Illustrated flora of Vietnam” (Pham- Hoàng Hô, 1991-1993); some plant names were specified according to “Illustrated flora of South Vietnam” (Pham- Hoàng Hô, 1970-1972). Specification of some plant names was made with the help of herbarium specimens stored at herbarium of Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources of Ho Chi Minh city. Further specification and determination of some collected specimens is possible only with the help of specialists on concrete taxonomic groups.
Of special interest is a collection of fruits of tropical plants collected by N.G. Prilepsky in 1995-1996 in Bien Lac – Nui Ong forestry (Binh Thuan province), Cat Tien national park (Lam Dong province), Nha Trang neighborhood (Khanh Hoa province), Ma Da forest (Dong Nai province), Vung Tau neighborhood (Ba Ria – Vung Tau province) and Ho Chi Minh city. The collection contains fruits of: Acacia auriculaeformis A.Cunn. ex Benth., A. megaladena Desv., Afzelia xylocarpa (Kurz) Craib, Ancistrocladus sp., Bombax sp., Buchanania sp., Ceiba pentandra (L.) Gaertn., Delonix regia (Hook.) Raf., Dioscorea sp., Dipterocarpus sp., D. dyeri Pierre, D. turbinatus Gaertn. f., Garcinia sp., Gnetum sp., Irvingia sp., Knema sp., Lagerstroemia duperreana Pierre ex Gagnep. (L. thorelii Gagnep.), Lasiobema cardinale (Pierre ex Gagnep.) de Wit, Leea indica (Burm.f.) Merr. (L. sambucina Willd.), Mimosa pigra L. (M. aspera M.E. Jones), Mussaenda sp., Pandanus sp., Parkia sumatrana Miq., Pecteilis susannae (L.) Raf. (Habenaria susannae (L.) R.Br.), Pteris decrescens H. Christ, Pterospermum sp., Randia dasycarpa (Kurz) Bakh. f. (R. tomentosa Bl. in DC.), Sonneratia sp., Syzygium sp., Tacca sp., Ternstroemia sp., Uvaria micrantha Hook. f.&Thoms., Ventilago sp., Viscum articulatum Burm. f., Vitex sp., Zingiber sp. (?).
