WORLD
May has been the least active month of 2012 so far, worldwide, in terms of 5.0+ magnitude earthquakes with a total of 118.
However, don't tell this to the people of Northern Italy, as they experienced a 6.1 magnitude earthquake on May 20th that left 17 dead, close to 350 injured, and forced over 14,000 to leave their homes. This area experienced a total of 809 recorded earthquakes for the month as 5 of those were between 5.0 and 5.9, 26 were between 4.0 and 4.9, and the remaining 777 were less than 4.0.
The 20th also was the most active day of the month with 12 of the 118 5.0+ earthquakes and 3 of the 11 6.0+ earthquakes happening on that day.
The strongest earthquake of the month was a 6.7 that occurred on May 28th near Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

For the fourth consecutive month, earthquakes in this region has occurred at a rate of less than 2.00 EQPD, (1.64). There were 51 recorded earthquakes of which 6 were at 3.0+, and 1 at 4.0+.
May 10th was the most active day of the month with 5 recorded earthquakes, with 4 of those 5 being between 3.2 and 3.9 in magnitude.
The strongest earthquake of the month occurred near Timpson, Texas on May 17th. It was originally reported as a 4.3, but later upgraded to 4.8 in magnitude, making it the strongest earthquake in East Texas history.
