Collaborative Learning Assignment – Step 1

Due: September 10 and September 15

Assignment Objective

According to Cox (2002), goal setting “is a theory of motivation that effectively energizes athletes [dancers] to become more productive and effective;” (p.90) however, rarely is this theory applied to dance studio training. This assignment will provide students with the opportunity to transfer the goal setting skills offered by Richard Cox to the context of their own training in classical ballet.

Reading:

Cox, Richard (2002) Chapter 6: Goal Setting in Sport.Sport Psychology: Concepts and Applications. New York: McGraw-Hill Companies (pp. 89-104).

Goal Setting in Sportprovides the basic information on three types of goals: outcome, performance and process. Since this reading references sport and does not directly comment on goal setting in the dance studio, students are required to adapt the information to the dance student learning environment.

Please read this article by September 10 and answer the following questions. On September 10th and September 15 you will be given in-class time to work with your partner on setting your short range and long-range process goals. Please come to class with your comments and questions, on how to plan to apply the SMART model of goal setting in this class in tandem with your partner.

  1. Based on the information you read on goal setting, in your own words, identify the difference between outcome goals, performance goals and process goals and the pros or cons for each. How can each of these goals be applied the dance studio? Provide one example for each.
  2. The authors suggest that there are four reasons goal setting results in improved performance. Identify these reasons within the context of the dance studio.
  3. Identify your short-range process goal for this term? What is your long-range process goal for the year? Remember your short-range process goal should relate to your long range process goal. Use the content on the midterm self -evaluation form for potential goals you wish to set.
  4. Using the SMART model for goal setting, break down both the short-range process goal and the long-range process goal.
