GRADE 8 French 2A (Novice)

This course begins with a review of themes and grammar learned in French 1. Students will expand on their knowledge and put into practice what they have learned by speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French.Students are expected to speak French in class. We will read about historical figures in France with focus on the middle ages. Students will research the food and culture on regions of France. Students will complete a research project on French speaking countries in Africa focusing on current events. We will learn about the history and culture of Quebec in preparation for our visit in the spring. This course is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

·  increase vocabulary- food, health, parts of the body, technology.

·  read and discuss specific events from the French middle ages.

·  research and present information on French speaking countries in Africa.

·  compare and contrast aspects of French and American language and culture

·  write an original fable using the passé composé and the imparfait.

·  read for understanding- French fables

·  use French accents.

·  describe themselves and their daily routines and household chores.

·  express different forms of negation.

·  use vocabulary for computer technology.

·  use expressions of quantity describing recipes using the metric system.

·  describe health, common illnesses, and personal care.

·  research, compare, and discuss French health care system

·  increase proficiency in grammar: new irregular verbs present and past compound tense, pronouns y and en, reflexive verbs, new idioms, direct object pronouns, expressions of time, introduction to the imperfect tense

Language lab (parents and students must signCMS Language Lab Acceptable Use Policy which will be handed out on lab day, 2nd week of school)

Materials:

Notebook for notes/homework, binder for handouts, pencils, white board markers, colored pencils or markers, scissors, glue stick

Tests and quizzes: Listening/ Speaking/ Writing/Reading: mini quizzes (after a new concept has been taught, students can retake within the week) (15% of grade)

Listening/ Speaking/ Writing/Reading quizzes: After each chapter (approx. once a week, or once every two weeks) (20% of grade)

Oral and/or Written Presentations: one each term, (work in class and at home, often with a partner)

One week notice for presentations (quiz grade 20%)

Also oral and written formative assessments throughout the week; ex; pop quiz, activity sheets, oral presentations, skits, games

Homework: daily homework must be done to reinforce newly acquired material and prepare for class, it should not take more than 20 minutes to complete. Late homework accepted for ½ credit within the week. If student is having difficulty with the homework, he or she is expected to stay after school for extra help, and complete assignment for full credit.

Discipline: students should expect to receive after school detention of ½ hour for being late, not having required materials, or distracting others from completing work.

What you need to do to be successful in the French class: be on time, be respectful, participate, work hard, be organized, do your homework and parlez français!
