Students will build upon skills learned in the first semester course and will be able to express themselves in a variety of more complex situations in Italian.
This course is the second of a two-course elementary Italian sequence, which is the beginning part of a four-course Italian program.

FALL/SPRING SEMESTERS:
There are 2 required hours per week of unscheduled lab activities. They are to be fulfilled in the following ways:
1. Required: Listening to CD's (or accessing the Online Laboratory Manual on the
Web) and completing written exercises in the Prego Lab Manual for each chapter.
2. Optional: Individual or small-group tutoring sessions are available in the Modern
Language Department.
SUMMER SEMESTERS
1. Listening to CD's (or accessing the Online Laboratory Manual on the WEB) and
completing written exercises in the Prego Lab Manual – required.
2. There is a scheduled 3-hour lab session which is required unless the student
maintains an average of "A" on tests and quizzes.

LABS
You must complete a series of laboratory assignments in the Lab Manual for each chapter.
Most of these assignments require that you listen to the Student Audio Program and then
repeat and/or write answers to questions in your Lab Manual. Listening comprehension is a
very important element of the entire course, and indeed of learning any language. The more
you listen, the better your comprehension and speaking ability. The CDs are available in
the College Store. They are also on reserve in the BCC Library in the Multimedia section on the first floor. Alternatively, the audio program can be downloaded from the Web at Your computer will need a media player, e.g. Windows Media Player.

VIDEO TO ACCOMPANY PREGO -- Please note that in order to view the Videoteca segments on the Web you must use a computer with a cable modem or DSL in order to run the Real Player 8 application.

Grading Standard:
EVALUATION
In this class, testing serves two purposes: to help determine grades and to
evaluate the progress of students. The oral and written tests you will take evaluate your ability to understand and communicate messages in Italian.
There are four traditionally identified communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and structure (grammar) which are basic tools for the acquisition of linguistic competency.
TESTING WILL BE DONE AS FOLLOWS:
- Test on Capitolo 550 points
(listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar)
Oral Test ------>25 points
- Test on Capitolo 650 points
(listening, vocabulary, grammar, writing)
- Test on Capitolo 750 points
(listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar,)
Oral Test 2 (Capitolo 6 e Capitolo 7) ------>25 points

You will loose 1 point for each absence.
You may obtain credit for the missed class by attending another
section of the same course or by attending a ½ - hour tutoring session.

All Written tests are to be taken at the TestingCenter in the NAS building. Oral testing is scheduled with your instructor 3 times during the semester, outside of class time. Oral tests require about 10 minutes each.
Tests must be taken within one week of the date listed on the semester plan. Failure to do so will result in the loss of 5 points for every week a test is not completed.
RE-TESTING
If you do not pass an oral or written test the first time you take it, you may
re-take it one more time. The procedure for re-taking is as follows:
- Work with a tutor on the test you failed.
- Obtain a re-test permission slip from your instructor.
3. Go to the testing center, present the slip, and make sureyou are given
there-test version of the test you are re-taking.
PLEASE NOTE that re-testing is principally designed to help those who fail a test. The maximum grade that can be achieved on a re-test is 79%.
If a student has a grade lower than 79% on the first version of a test and would like to raise the grade to a maximum of 79%, the teacher can authorize a re-test.
** FINAL GRADE **
Your final grade will be based on the number of points you have received on the above criteria. However, you must have accumulated 227 points on the tests (equivalent to 70%) before any homework, attendance or participation points are added.
Any student who averages 65-69% on tests will receive a “D” grade for the course. Homework, attendance and participation points will not raise the “D” grade.
In this course you may achieve:
A (90% - 100%)=400 – 445 points
B+ (85% - 89%)=378 – 399 points
B (80% - 84%)=356 – 377 points
C+ (75% - 79%)=333 – 355 points
C (70% - 74%)=311 – 332 points
D (65% - 69%)=289 – 310 points
F(less than 65%) =288 points or less
Department Policies:
IF YOUR FINAL GRADE IS A “D”, YOU WILLPASS THE COURSE BUT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO A HIGHER LEVEL IN THIS LANGUAGE.
During the last 2 weeks of the semester, one week in summer semesters, testing on Chapter 9 ONLY will be allowed. All other tests, oral and written, MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THIS TIME.
If you have NOT completed the course requirements by the end of the semester, but have successfully completed at least Chapters 5, 7 you may apply for an “Incomplete.” Your instructor will explain this procedure during the last 2 weeks of the semester.
