  • Several members attended Howard County’s Annual Civility Conference and several proposed ideas were presented to the committee for consideration of SOE’s civility efforts. For example, ribbons to identify committee members to be work right before and during a sponsored CODC event.

Students

  • Published Religious Observance policy – now standard content required for all syllabi
  • Diversity and Inclusion statement is now school-wide required standard content for all syllabi
  • Diversity Matters content to be formatted appropriately and added to the OneStop site for students.
  • Civility Guidelines - are being reviewed to determine if changes are needed and/or how to more visibly incorporate them into practice.
  • Civility Tips were published in the JHU Newsletter
  • A student wrote a piece about civility for the JHU Newsletter

Faculty – Promotions Policy and Support for Promotions Process

  • Revised Promotions Policy language to include specific language which recognizes that the seven year promotions time line for Assistant to Associate Professor, can be stopped for a period of time with Dean’s approval, in the case of faculty who have special or extraordinary personal /family matters that impact the faculty member’s ability to focus on the work required for promotion.
  • Role of Promotions Committee -partnered with the promotions committee to clarify the role of the committee with respect to providing coaching and interim reviews for Assistant Professors who areworking towards promotion, resulting in language to be added to the charge of the promotions committee and the faculty information site on Inside Education that promotes this role and encourages promotion track faculty to contact the committee to schedule this review no later than 3 years into the promotion cycle.
  • Promotions events -
  • Lunch and Learn with Ed Pajak explaining and providing insight on the promotions process and what is necessary to be promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor
  • Joint Sponsor of the faculty “Writing Seminar”. Focus is to provide a supportive environment in which faculty can come together and write. It is open to all faculty, but the target audience is Assistant Professors who are working toward promotion.
  • Continuation of Joint CODC and CPC taskforce to specifically focus on faculty issues that have a diversity and/or civility intersection.

Faculty and Staff

  • CODC Chair and HR Manager/CODC Member met with Deans Leadership Council, reviewed faculty and staff climate survey responses. In-depth discussion about questions related to promotion and publication. Resulted in a deeper understanding of the promotions committee role and openness of promotions committee to provide interim review for Assistant Professors on track for promotion to Associate Professor and workshops.
  • SOE Faculty and Staff Retreat: Developed opening slide montage featuring cultural autobiographies created by staff and faculty interspersed with acrostics created from the word “diversity”.
  • Launch of the SOE Book Club – Spring and Summer reading.
