We are delighted to be hosting UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest on our campus again this year. There are no major changes, but take time to refresh your memory about a few things.
- Please ask your bus drivers to drop you off in front of the auditorium. After your students have disembarked, the bus may park in the area by the tennis courts.
- If you are early, your students are welcome to remain in the foyer area or listen to choirs until it is time for you to proceed to the warm-up room. Please do not allow your students to go into any other areas of our building.
- Restrooms are along the hallway that runs the length of the auditorium. There is plenty of space for students to change into their uniforms there if necessary.
- Directors should proceed to the contest office as soon as you arrive on campus. Please be sure you bring three copies of each of your pieces for the judges. Remember to number the measures in each. If you have not turned in your Form 1, you may turn it in at that time also.
- One of the Central choir members will meet you and serve as the guide for your choir. The guide will meet you in the foyer 15 minutes before your scheduled warm up time and will remain with your choir until you have finished sightreading.
- Please help us stay on schedule. If you are late arriving to campus, you may have to sacrifice time in the warmup room so we remain on schedule throughout the day.
- We will have eight sets of four-step risers on the concert stage as well as in the sightreading room (band hall).
- We will have a student working backstage to help you set any stands and/or chairs for instrumentalists you may have. If you have any instrumentalists that will require an unusual or grandiose stage setup, please send me that information as soon as possible so we may be prepared in advance.
- We do NOT have a place to store students’ valuables. Please plan accordingly. You are welcome to leave all your choirs’ backpacks, purses, etc. in an area of seats in the auditorium. I feel confident that no one will bother them with judges and workers in the room constantly.
- I will help our student announcer with the pronunciation of your program early in the week. The announcer will then check with the director of each ensemble to make sure she announces them in the correct performance order.
- You are allowed to have the sightreading rules read by one of the judges. This is your prerogative; however, if everyone asks to have the rules read, there is no way we will be able to stay on time in the sightreading room and that will cause the entire contest to fall behind. Please keep that in mind.
- Music education students will once again be acting as timekeepers in the sightreading room. Please be prepared to tell them what warnings you would like for both the six (or seven in the case of Sub-NV) and two minute instructional periods.
- After your ensemble has sightread, your guide will take your students back to the auditorium foyer.
- Directors are welcome in the contest office (Black Box). No students are allowed in the contest office unless they are contest workers.
- A concession stand will be provided for your convenience. Our Booster Club will have snacks (including fresh-baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies) and drinks. If you are planning to stay on campus through the lunch hour and need us to provide pizza or Chik-fil-A to sell to your group, please contact me as soon as possible. They are happy to provide this option but will only do so if they know it will be used.
- If you choose to take your students to lunch, there are numerous restaurants and fast food establishments in the Alliance Shopping Center (at Heritage Trace and I-35W) and along Highway 377 (just east of school).
- When we have compiled and recorded each choirs’ judging sheets, we will return them to the manila envelope for your choir. Please have ONE director from each SCHOOL check your choir out. This will keep us from duplicating awards.
- Please, please remind your students ahead of time that cell phones must be turned OFF during a choir’s performance. I always remind them they never get a second chance to make a first impression on the judges---and that includes their time in the audience! Also, we no longer allow food and drinks (other than water) inside auditorium. All eating should take place in the foyer.
If there is anything else, please call or email me. The day of the contest, you will need to call my cell phone (817-233-1550) or Jen’s (817-896-3459) rather than either of our office phone numbers.
Happy rehearsing!
