The Baltic Sea ecosystem and how to use it in teaching?

Lecture by professor Lena Kautsky, Department of Botany, Stockholm university, Sweden

The Baltic Sea is a young ecosystem that has only existed with this low salinity in about 7000 years. Few species that have been able to colonize the waters have an origin either from the marine or freshwater and all live under constant stress. The lecture will take up issues about the adaptation of species to this brackish environment. An overview of the largest threats to the Baltic Sea ecosystems by human activities, i.e. eutrophication, toxic substances and over fishing will be presented and their impact on different parts of the ecosystem. Further a set of local examples on what can be done to improve conditions in e.g. shallow coastal areas or bays will be presented. Also some examples of experiments or small field studies will be given during the presentation that could be performed with students.
