Let’s Make It Digital

Adding Transitions and Titles

Objective & Outcomes

The purpose of this mini-lesson is to provide students with instruction on how to add transitions and titles. After completing this lesson students will be able to: add transitions between clips; insert titles over black screens; insert titles over a picture or video.

·  BOC 9.1 (RELATES TO 6.1) - operate a wide variety of school media, computer, and other educationally appropriate equipment for learning, communication, and the representation

of their learning, independently and safely with teacher supervision

·  BOC 9.5 (RELATES TO 6.1, 6.2,6.3, 6.4) - from a range of resource options, knowledgeably select, manage, and use technological resources to solve curriculum problems and enhance their learning, with teacher guidance

Materials

·  LCD Projector

·  iMovie/iPhoto

Lesson Description

Using the LCD projector, demonstrate how to add titles and transitions to the digital story. Demonstrate how to select the title, add the text and then drag and drop it into the story. The transitions are added by dragging and dropping them between clips.

Some things to remember:

·  Titles may go over a black screen, video or still graphic.

·  Titles add a layer to the video or still graphic that they are added to, so to remove the title you select the clip and hit delete and the layer with the title will be deleted, not the clip.

·  Make sure titles are on the screen long enough to be read by the audience

·  Have the titles as large as possible.

·  Select appropriate colors for the text so that it is legible.

·  Transitions use part of the clips that they connect, so if there is an error, try shortening the transition time and adding it again.

·  Use transitions that are appropriate and use only one or two transitions per project. Transitions should not distract from the meaning of the story.

·  Transitions should be added last to the project because if updates are needed on the clips the transitions must be removed to make these updates.
